4.108 borg Warner can’t find a refab tranny.

I took out my tranny on my new to me boat. It had problems. I have a marine mechanic helping me find a new one but tells me he can’t find one. He said Foley is out of the question. He found a rebuilt kit to rebuild the bad one and I want to use it as a spare. The serial number on the bell house plate is 101.7640
The number stamped on the tranny is 993 07 17. I didn’t take a pic of the tranny out of the engine room. I’m asking what other avenues y’all have used to find rebuilt tranny’s preferably in the us. I’m on Maui and seriously doubt there’s one in Hawaii. I just feel like this should be easy to find. This is the mechanics job but I’m just curious to hear from everyone with experience far greater than mine for sure. Foley had a number plated on the tranny but I didn’t write that down the mechanic has that number. Thanks

Your mechanic is right to dismiss Foley. You cannot trust him.

The title to your post states that you have a Borg Warner transmission, but the transmission in the photos appears to be a Hurth...

Go online or call ZF Marine in Ft. Lauderdale ( ZF bought Hurth years ago) and ask for the name of the ZF distributor on the west coast. That distributor can help you outright or refer you to a service dealer on the west coast or on Hawaii.

Tim--

Your "suvey" is wrong. It's a Hurth and you can find a matching replacement at TransAtlantic Diesel (see google) for a modest price/cost. Folley/Dr. Diesel is a scam/BS artist so don't event think about that resource.

FWIW...

My thoughts as well, had one on my boat when purchased, started slipping about 12 months later, replaced with a PRM box new that was only marginally more than a rebuilt Hurth but with a far better reputation . Fitted straight in except that it was, from memory, about 25 mm longer.
You do have options.

I have four of them but in truth I'd recommend something a bit more robust. My current boat is using a PRM150 which is hydraulic and while larger it has similar output shaft position and uses the ZF "keyhole" bolt pattern on your bellhousing. You'll want to replace your drive plate regardless of what you use.

Re: 4.108 borg Warner can’t find a refab tranny.

I have the same unit (looks like a Hurth 100 or 150) and will be doing the same repairs on mine - friction discs [or maybe thrust bearing] are worn and need to be replaced so it is tough getting in into forward. For parts, check out https://www.ebay.com/p/ZF-Hurth-Mari...8043909&chn=ps or https://www.halemarine.com/index.php...index&cPath=25 Watch to learn how to do it!

I have what appears to be the same one, and I will be working on mine next month. For parts, go to: https://www.ebay.com/p/ZF-Hurth-Mari...8043909&chn=ps or https://www.ebay.com/itm/Hurth-HBW-5...-/232699990012.

To learn how to do it, go to: and and you will be on your way!

Re: 4.108 borg Warner can’t find a refab tranny.

So it looks like mine is a zf10. New looks to be 3200 if I just wanted to ship it over to Maui. Not sure the shipping. The other prm150 looks to be cheaper and I think what I want at 1700 to 1800. Now I’m looking at a rebuild kit. Not sure the price on that. Probly half of a new refab tranny I’m guessing. I just got off work and forwarded the awesome info above to my mechanic and after he gets a catalog I’ll make a decision on what to do. I want a spare tranny so I may get mine rebuilt and look for a good deal on a refab or used tranny. Thanks again for the above info.
