Very good your icons, all you need now is to be able to make it fit to scale (correct length and breadth) in the program.

The icon must be called ownship.xpm, nothing else.

Re: Free OpenCPN Icons

...has anyone else noticed that you can put ownship in a FOLDER named "ownship"? this is kind of useful for finding and switching them amongst the others you may have.ou can just drag your new ownship.xpm into the folder.
It's weird this works but it does.

Unfortunately, this is not possible within the icon properties. The icons remain the same size as you zoom in or out within OpenCPN. The yacht icons shown in post No. 42 of this thread are properly scaled using CMAP 93 charts - but only if you zoom in to the maximum.

Re: Free OpenCPN Icons

I made a bunch of user icons, 366 of them, about a year ago and it is time to share them!

These are mostly generic shapes; circles, triangles, squares etc. The difference is there are many colors and fills. The fills are either not filled, solid or a dot.

I made them slightly smaller than the stock opencpn icons. On high resolution screens they are small. The naming system is fairly easy to figure out and they will not cause overwrite issues with anyone elses icons.

Great Jim!
Do you mind if I add these to the opencpn.org->download-> User Icons?
It's easier to make new icons nowadays as png's are accepted!

Re: Free OpenCPN Icons

Hi,

I'd like to ask the experts for user icons if anybody can tell me, how the icons are positioned by OpenCPN?

Assumed you have a small circle at the bottom of the icon which should be placed at the exact coordinates, how to achieve this?

Referring to the XPM(3) Spec. X PixMap - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia there are two optional values to define a "hotspot".
Is this working with OpenCPN?
And how about icons in PNG format? How are these icons positioned by OpenCPN?
Are the icons always centered (vertically and horizontally)?

Many thanks for any help in advanced!

Greetings
Gunther

Hello, and welcome back!
The whole system for displaying icons has changed.
JesperWe is behind the change. He is busy down in Ushuaia for the moment....
Have a look at this page -> Vector Palette | Official OpenCPN Homepage. Note the <pivot> tag towards the bottom of the page.

Re: Free OpenCPN Icons

Hello Thomas,

Many thanks for the tip/ hint.
It is exactly what I was looking for, or is it not?

After a first quick view on the page things seem to be clear for changing the appearance of existing symbol graphics.

I'll do some further investigation to find out how to use this with new user icons ...!

Or let me ask some more questions:
  • Are user (added) icons still be placed into the folder "UserIcons"?
  • Where to add the XML (which itself is clear)?

Gunther

Probably not! It looks like I answered something you didn't ask.

I don't know how far you can stretch JesperWe's styles.
I have this in my log
Quote:
16:00:16 CET: No styles found at: /home/thomas/
16:00:16 CET: No styles found at: /home/thomas/.opencpn/
so those locations seems suitable for some testing.
The "UserIcons" folder still works the same.

Yes it looks that way to me, using the total size of the picture, not just the visible part. Those icons that gets it right includes the transparent parts in the calculations. I have just looked at xpm files, but I think (not tested) that png's are the same. Please test and come back with your findings.

Re: Free OpenCPN Icons

Here are some free user icons in the latest .png format.
These icons are an improvement compared to my previous icons posted under my previous forum name of MooseMoney. These icons are freeware and you may use and modify them as you wish.

Download them from: Revelations - Home

To use them in OpenCPN;
  • Create a directory called "UserIcons" in the same place that holds your opencpn.ini (config) file. In Windows 7: C:\ProgramData\opencpn
  • Download the UserIcons and unzip/unrar in your new "UserIcons" folder.
  • Start OpenCPN and use!
