Disadvantage of this link, it leads to a link in French but without an English version.

That said, this link shows the different possibilities of another software.

I able to describe the different possibilities of this other software and show the differences with OpenCPN's Grib plugin. So if asked I will.

Re: New Grib Presentation

My personal request relating to the Grib plugin concerns:

- on the one hand the functioning of the request and the download (and the display) of the Grib file with the Thunderbird software
- on the other hand, directly accessible European Grib file models.

When sending the request requesting a GRIB file, using the Thunderbird software, this one closes automatically just after sending it. However, currently, even with not very good internet access, the return of the Grib file is very very fast. But, you have to re-open Thunderbird manually.

It would be nice if after Thunderbird sends the mail, Thunderbird stays open.

The accessible Grib file models are currently: - GFS, COAMPS, HRRR, RTOFS, ICON .
I am European.

I observe we do not have access to European models. For example, for a Frenchman, it would be good if we had access to the ARPEGE and AROME models from MétéoFrance, to the Copernicus model.

The English, German or Iberian models would also be interesting.

Would it be possible that these models are accessible to us?

Re: New Grib Presentation

Hello Dave,

This concerns the Grib plugin, as provided with version 5.7.1 #3 by the master catalog.

It is possible to choose to have access to SailDoc or Zygrib. But for Zygrib, you need an access code retrieved from the zygrib.org website.

Unfortunately, it no longer seems possible to recover this access code. See below, the screenshot of the page where it was possible to access code.

Is it permanent, or temporary? If it is definitive, it is probably necessary to adapt the Grib plugin.

Re: New Grib Presentation

NZ Cyclone (Hurricane) Gabriel hits our friends on Coromandel Peninsula. We are hoping for the best. Downloaded from Saildocs source. My suggestion, with the current focus on OpenCPN program development, is to belay the work on this internal plugin, until after work on the core is done, when this important plugin can be updated and fixed. Best to develop a comprehensive list for the plugin.

Re: New Grib Presentation

Dear all,

I read the above about zyGrib. zyGrib seems to be out of date. The "modern" version to my knowledge is XyGrib https://opengribs.org/en/ .

Honestly I do not know the relation between the two programs and development teams, however, with XyGrib you have access to ECMWF as well as ICON, AROME, etc. ...
May be this is interesting?

Best regards, Uwe

You don't teach me anything. I know Zygrib is outdated. But, there was a time when you needed the access code to run OpenCPN. And even when Xygrib took the place of Zygrib, it worked.

What is important is that this plugin is suitable.

I suggest that we should make a comprehensive list of all the things most needed for grib_pi.

Re: New Grib Presentation

Dave Burch of Starpath advises that adding "REFC" to grib requests work

GFS:42.00N,39.00N,75.00W,72.00W|0.25,0.25|0,3,6..2 4|WIND,PRMSL,REFC
HRRR:42.00N,39.00N,75.00W,72.00W|0.03,0.03|0,1,2.. 18|WIND,PRMSL,REFC

This factor is computed Reflectivity REFC and is good for predicting storms and high winds, better than CAPE.

The problem is that the Comp REF parameter is greyed out when requesting a GFS or HRRR grib. This is going to be fixed, but because the plugin is an internal plugin it will not be updated until the next version is released.

For the time being just add ".REFC" to the end of your grib requests in your email.

Re: New Grib Presentation

Dave has fixed the REFC in master but it will not be available until the next version of O. SO add REFC manually.

Re: New Grib Presentation

I don't really understand the point of spending time on possibly improving the sending of gribs by email.
Indeed, on the one hand, the addresses of the grib and weather sites can change, on the other hand it requires a lot of manipulation (if I understood correctly):
- click to open the plugin;
- click to open email management;
and then you have to select the right file, etc. Phew...

I have never used this system which I find a little "archaic".
Personally, I wrote a simple little batch program. It launches at the same time as opencpn, downloads all the desired gribs and weather files if there is an internet connection and automatically sorts them into the relevant folders for OpenCPN and other software such as TimeZero, SimSail, etc. by deleting the previous file.
Result: On OpenCPN, with a single click, I open the grib plugin and immediately, the recently downloaded gribs are displayed.

But everyone does what they want...

This being said, a significant improvement would be to allow the grib window to "hide" automatically according to a time that we define; this minimized window could be positioned at the bottom of OpenCPN (a bit like the Logbook).
Indeed, depending on the number of plugins open, there are many windows open and in the end, this harms the readability of the navigation map, which is nevertheless the essential...

Re: New Grib Presentation

Yes, getting weather data into OpenCPN is very cumbersome compared to say, Timezero. In TZ, you click a button and the weather is directly downloaded for either the area currently displayed or for a preset area. Another button press and the weather is displayed. Very simple and easy to update.

When we do weather routing on OpenCPN, the screen is pretty much covered by open plugin dialogs and a click this than that than this workflow.

Hi there, thanks for this update. However, when trying to install the numerous parts, I am getting : "E: Unable to locate package libllvm11:armhf" and then the whole thing stops. Do you have any hint?

Thanks a lot and best regards,

Uwe
