Re: OpenCPN Internationalization ( i18n )

Gilletarom,

After Post #568 You and I private emailed, and we had been working on a description for Plugin Internationalization to be added here
Internationalization | Official OpenCPN Homepage.

Since then my private email filled and I deleted most of it, inadvertently deleting the paragraphs we worked on. Can you post the paragraphs here? or send them to me? I'd like to update the manual and augment it.

Dutch translation for Celestial Navigation plugin. However, I noticed that al lot of text in the UI is not present in the pot-file, and therefor cannot be translated.

Re: OpenCPN Internationalization ( i18n )

Regarding translation of the latest beta 3.3.604

I can't seem to find the lines:
"Show names with AIS targets at scale greater than 1:"
"Treat WPL sentences as APRS position reports"
"Show distance as" + "Nautical miles" + "Statute miles"
"Show speed as" + "Knots"

Tried to find it in the pot file as well, but no luck.
Using current files from Master branch at git.

Please advice.

Translators...
Please be a bit patient and wait until the 3.3 beta series GUI stabilizes. We will announce that moment and update the POT/PO files. If you want to help now, please torture the functionality of the new betas.

Thanks for understanding

Actual problems

Hello!

When restarting a translation from scratch, our team has encountered a long list of issues with the current state of source code and translation template. Just to name:
  1. Common issues:
    1. Duplicates due to inconsistent spelling — like “OK” and “Ok”, or “AIS Target List...” and “AIS target list”.
    2. Duplicates specific to GUI conventions — like “Waypoint Properties” and “&Waypoint Properties...”, or “Object Query” and “Object Query...”.
    3. Low usage of text placeholders — like concatenating “For this leg the Great Circle route is” with “shorter than rhumbline.\n\n” instead of giving the complete control over translation with sprintf-patterns like “Scale %4.0f (%1.1fx)”.
    4. HTML and C-style markup mixed with translated text — like “<font size=-2>(Sector angles are True Bearings from Seaward)</font><br>” or “\n - your ship's length must be > 0”.
    5. Unnecessary additional whitespaces (a special case of markup mixing) — like “␠ChartFile:␠␠” or “Elapsed time␠:␠”.
    6. Punctuation-only sentences with unclear meaning — like “-”, “--” and “---”.
    7. Excessively compound words in camel-case — like “ChartFile: ” or “OverZoom”.
    8. Incorrect and inconsistent spelling in general — like “1.0 NM along COG” and “No CPA Calculation if target range is greater than (NMi)”.
    9. Decentralized expression of units of measurement, date and time, coordinate, — with tons of custom inline formatting, most of which marked as non-translatable, leading to half of main screen remaining in English even with 100%-translated template.
    10. Numbers expressed as digits to be translated — like “0” to “9”, or “150” to “921600”.
    11. Well-known protocol names to be translated — like “TCP” and “UDP”.
    12. Ambiguous strings — like “COG Predictor Length (min)”, which may refer to either “minimal” or “minutes”, as well as “minutes of arc”.
    13. Mysterious lexemes — like “_A” or “_plus”, which remain obscure even after looking into the source code.
  2. Specific issues:
    1. Font-names not only displayed to the user, but also used for storing the preferences.
    2. Some strings were included in the translation template by mistake and need to be excluded, — like those used in communication protocols, or written to log files even before the language preferences are initialized.
    3. Some strings need to be disambiguated, — like “Display” or “Base”, which meaning varies from a noun or an adjective up to a verb, depending on usage context.
    4. Some strings need to be included into translation, — plenty of UI-only captions were marked as non-translatable by mistake.
    5. The S-57 ENC specification, used in the “Object Query” dialog, is not translatable currently.
A more detailed description with examples and proposed solutions can be found in the attached file.

Of course, we are not just making notes of other's errors, but are ready to correct those issues ourselves.
  • We just wanted to notify the authors and the translators community of the initiative.
  • It seems wise to distribute the efforts in accordance with qualification level: simple issues, like typos and so on, may be solved by virtually anyone, while fundamental problems, like number formatting, may require more architectural experience for optimal solution.
  • It is also important to determine the version to base on, since the 3.3-beta introduces several new features, but they are not stable yet.
Perhaps, someone else has also found other issues that complicate translation to his/her language, — it would be nice to generalize the proposals, as well as to hear your opinions about our ideas.

APRS = "Automatic Packet Reporting System"
It's explained a bit in FlySpray #964.
You can see the new icons on the wiki AIS page

WPL is an NMEA sentence and stands for - "Waypoint Location Information".

I hope that this will help you!

Re: OpenCPN Internationalization ( i18n )

Can someone explain to me what "Statute miles" is?
I have never used that terminology before. This gives me a problem to translate it to Norwegian.

Please supply a context and on what type of ship this applies to...

I tried googling for it, but it did not give me a good answer...

Please advice.

A "statue mile" is simply a "land mile", also known as an "English Mile". It is equal to1609 meters.
It's used for navigation on rivers and lakes in North America. Compare with how km is used on (continental) European inland waterways for measuring distances.
