Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

Can someone check their
Garmin GMR 18 HD Marine Radar
to see what the Standby wattage is?

The Garmin specs do not include this detail.
This looks like a nice reasonably sized unit.

Thank you.

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

Rick...

Measured GMR-18HD with clamp-on ammeter.
Don't necessarily trust the meter at low current measurements, since the lowest range on the meter is 40 A.

However, measurements:

STANDBY: ~ 1.0 A, or 12W nominal
TX: ~ 1.8 A, say 20 W nominal.

Hope this helps
Dave

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

Thanks, that is very helpful. Our 1991 Autohelm Radar on backstay is 12 lbs and is light on power use (16 nm range). The Garmin GMR-18HD would be 17lbs, same size dia, 12 w standby, 20w transmit VS a Broadband at 20w Tx and 2.7w standby and 16 lb. So the Garmin is certainly an alternative. I wonder how fast from Standby ---> Transmit?

Next year I'd like to get a bigger NAV screen/tablet/compiiuter and connect to Radar, because we nearly mowed down Hens and Chickens this summer in heavy wind, due to small screen on handheld.

If it makes you feel better I have gotten very similar readings on the GMR-18xHD with a clamp meter too.

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

Hey, might there be hope for using my Si Tex Radar PC scanner with ocpn? The one I have is a circa 2000 serial version.

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

Hi!

I have a Garmin 18xHD scanner that I am trying to get working.
The setup is as fallows :

1) FitPC-3 running Win7 and OpenCPN 3.2.2.
2) Gradar plugin version 1.4 installed and enabled in Master mode.
3) Garmin scanner connected with shielded patch (strait) cat 5 cable to ethernet
amp connector with an on/off switch between pin 5 and the shield.
4) An unshielded patch cable (strait) between amp connector and the
ethernet port of the FitPC. I have no switch/hub.
5) Recorded GPS data is feed through usb to the FitPC.

6) No firewall running.
7) Ethernet IPV4 port configured to 172.16.1.1 and mask 255.255.240.0
8) Running Wireshark to se traffic on the ehternet port.

Trying to operate the scanner I do this :

1) Power is applied to the scanner.
2) Switch on the amp connector is turned on.
The LED on the scanner first turns red and then shortly starts flashing green.
3) OpenCPN is started. The Radar icon has the red dot which never turn amber or green.
4) Clicking the icon does not seem to make the antenna rotate and there is no echoes received.

All the menues are execcable.
I get UTP packet from source 172.16.2.0 port 50100

Including screenshot.

Should I have a crossover cable between he amp connector and the FitPC instead?
I doubt that this could be the problem as I am receiving UTP packets from the scanner.

How should the Status indicator on the icon behave. Now it is indefinitely red.

Any suggestions?

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

Hello Hans

Everything looks OK except the multicast packets are not going to the NIC address. I suspect they are going to your wifi address. Try shutting off the wifi.

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

Hi Chuck!

Thanks for the prompt reply!

So I did shut down the WiFi interface but no joy. Same thing.
Nothing new in the log file.
Attaching another screen plot.

One thing bothering me is line 4 saying :
Scanner state: Unknown (0)
Is that correct ?

Maybe I should do the "Testing Multicast UDP for Radar with 2 Computers" ?

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

Scanner state unknown should change to a known scanner state when packets are being received.

Are any of the packets in the wireshark file 60 bytes long? If so please post the contents.

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

Hans

I should have asked for the contents of a packet 62 bytes long.

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

There are packets with the length of :
60 (A lot)
76
98 and 122 bytes.

None with the length of 62 bytes.

If I start Wireshark with the scanner powered off and then turn it on I get one message with length 62 bytes but that is sent from the PC to IP 224.0.0.22
(Membership Report). Guess this is of no interest.

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

Just a thought:

Has any one got an XHD scanner or new HD working ?

In a previous post (#566) Secondcat mentioned that he had to update his garmin MFD firmware before the new scanner would work.

I'm wondering if there has been a change in the scanner firmware since it was reverse enginered .

Cheers,
JM.

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

Well then, let's try this.

On your network connections page, go to advanced settings.
Change the connection order so that the Local Area Connection is on top.

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

JM

You might be right. Reading post #564 and a few fallowing posts you realise that this can be the cause of my problem.

Logfiles and captured network files were sent. Did this result in any action?

Chuck

I don't know if I understand what you mean when you say
"Change the connection order so that the Local Area Connection is on top. "
The local interface is the only one.

Sending a screen shot of my settings.
