Re: OpenCPN Version 4.0 Released

Greg...
There hopefully should be nothing badly broken on SL, just try to follow the build instructions lowering the SDK versions. But as you know none of the regular contributors is using a Mac regularly, less this old. So I would suggest you just give it a try and we will try to resolve whatever might appear.
Of course the official prebuilt plugins will be incompatible.

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.0 Released

I just built current master for 10.6. I used MacPorts for wxWidgets (as I have in the past) and also tinyXML (which wasn't in the instructions but seems to be required). The build process didn't look TOO bad, but the app froze at start with the disclaimer showing. Attached are the terminal output for the build and the crash report.

Any ideas?

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.0 Released

For what it's worth - appears to run OK on Udoo Quad.
I only got it installed and running, so I haven't verified that everything works. I don't know if OpenCPN was on a repository before or not, but with the latest version of the OS from Udoo (which I think incorporates more of the armhf stuff) installation was pretty simple using apt-get. Script is posted on the Udoo forum for anyone interested.

Many thanks to the OpenCPN developers.

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.0 Released

Hi all,
Soon after the new release I tried to download and run 4.0 then found out it will not run on Mac Snow Leopard. I am reluctant to upgrade the OS based on browsing numerous forums because I predict my older Mac will run very slow.
Since then I have been busy but recently tried re-installing 3.2.2 again and it will not start . I have tried a fresh download after removing the program from the applications folder.
When trying to run 3.2.2 the message I get is "Open CPN unexpectedly quit".

In the report the first few lines are shown below. Any suggestions on how to get Open CPN to run again on Snow Leopard would be great.

Hi Transmitterdan,
I did a search of the hard drive and no "opencpn.log" file found.
So I guess no.

Version 4 blanks out some rocks

I recently installed the current release and have discovered a problem that was not there in 3.3.1606, the previous version I used. I am using CM93 charts.

When OpenCPN is installed, the Vecor Charts Display Category is set to Standard by default. With this setting it appears that "Underwater rock/awash rock" does not get displayed at higher zoom. As an example, I did some screen shots of Dorsal Rock in the Whitsundays. Coordinates are 20.35.4500 S, 149.10.1400 E. There is another rock on the south of nearby Thomas Island that exhibits the same behaviour.

At a zoom level of 1.1x in both Standard and Mariners Standard, the rocks appear as coloured circles with a cross. When zoomed 1 step closer the coloured circle disappears. In Mariners Standard it is replaced with an asterisk, while in Standard it is not displayed at all.

I found that unticking "Underwater rock/awash rock" in Mariners Standard replicates the Standard behaviour. In 3.3.1606 the circle gets replaced with an asterix regardless of whether Standard or Mariners Standard setting is selected.

This is a dangerous situation as the default installation will cause the rocks not to be displayed. A sailing vessel came to grief at Dorsal Rock last year. We heard the radio chatter when they abandoned the boat (although I think Marine Rescue was able to keep it afloat).

Windows 7 x32, OpenGL off.

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.0 Released

Steve,

In Tools>CHarts>VectorChartDisplay there is a detail slider for CM93 . Were the settings the same in 3.3 and 4.0?

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.0 Released

It doesn't matter where the slider is .... all the way -5 to +5 exhibits the same behaviour.

However I did notice something more concerning. As an experiment I switched OpenGL ON, and it behaves differently.

In Standard view (default installation), the rocks are no longer visible at all, regardless of zoom level. In Mariiners Standard, they are always visible, and display as the coloured circle with a cross (i.e. it does not change to an asterisk). Once Overzoom is reached, the icon grows larger.

The solution is to use Mariners Standard and all is OK. But how many people will be running with Standard. And worse if OpenGL is set, the rocks will never be visible. I'm assuming this is a bug, and Standard should not hide dangerous geographic features.

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.0 Released

I think it is time to write this up as a bug under Version 4.0 with a reasonably high priority. Wanderlust can you register on Tracker OpenCPN::Tracker Register new user and write it up?

Also please paste a link into the Tracker writeup, to your forum posts on this thread, that will be very helpful with the screenshots.

Thank you.

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.0 Released

I agree that it's a bug not showing a rock in Display category standard, with OpenGL on. Thanks for raising the issue.
Anyone starting to use vector charts should really read up on the documentation first. There are many potential traps, and a lot of things that are necessary to understand. It's not a coincidence that ship officers must pass tests for using vector charts system.
The OpenCPN documentation recommend the display category "All", as a starter. "Mariners Standard", is a OpenCPN specific display category, not in the "standard", that allows a lot of flexibility. It also includes the freedom to shot yourself in the foot, or generally screw up. If in doubt, change to display category "All".

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.0 Released

1. Pan to a location that has a skewed RNC chart.
2. Zoom in and select the skewed chart from the chart bar. This will uncheck the Quilt Charts box.
3. Right click and select an ENC group. The ENC group will be "Unquilted" until you remember to go back and check the quilt box.

It seems to me that you could use a "temporary unquilt variable" that gets set when you enter a skewed chart and unset when you leave a skewed chart; hopefully, then you could leave the user set "Enable Chart Quilting" box alone. I'm sure that it's not that easy; just an idea.

As an aside, I just noticed that there skewed ENC's that get quilted. Didn't know that before.
