Recommended Cockpit Platform

I am using OpenCPN on an Android phone, Samsung Galexy 10+.

It is OK but has some issues. Recently it has crashed a couple of times and it is also some of the controls are just too darn small.

I have been using PyPilot and parts of the interface either do not work or are so small that I can not use them except in perfect conditions.

I have a RayMarine C80 and a cut out for that. It is on the side of the cockpit, in the seat back. It would be nice if I could find a way to mount a replacement there. It is not a great spot but all that is available. It means I have to be able to view from an pretty good angle. And gives an idea of the space available.

It would be very desirable to have power and other connectors come from the back.

First and foremost it needs to be a solid platform for OpenCPN.

Finally I am most decidedly NOT a computer geek, it needs to be a pretty simple platform.

I know I am asking a lot and there may be nothing that fits all criteria. Still thought it might be worth asking.

Many thanks.

I was hoping I ng to find something less hands on that BBN seems to be.

I can not seem to find much written about BBN from a ludite perspective.

Looks good. Do you happen to know how many nits of brightness and if it is good in Bright Daylight?

We would just have to devise a Waterproof cover and Waterproof glands for cabling, but that might be easy to do. What have others done?

Thanks

How about upgrading to a more capable android device, like the Samsung Galaxy Active Tabs? They are waterproof with a bigger display and have good mounting options (Like the ram mount or make a custom mount with Quad Lock), and I believe the Active tab 3 has a high nit display for use in sunlight.

550nit is it bright enough? Otherwise it looks good too.

Its not perfect but the active tab 3 has a 700 nits high brightness mode, 1000+ nits direct sunlight displays are hard to come by, if the sun is aiming at it, you could maybe make a 3d printed sun shield or since its a tablet, just move it according to conditions.

Re: Recommended Cockpit Platform

I think you need something with a transflexive screen. My bottom of the range Raymarine Element S unit has a high brightness screen, at least 1000 nits and a transflexive screen - a feature I wasn't aware of until I tried it in full Mediterranean sun!

I also have an old Dell laptop that also has one, again a bonus I didn't know about until after I had bought it.

Inherent in the backlight area of the panel.

What happened to transflective displays? LEDS got efficient

Would BEF Brightness Enhancement Films work with LED

OCPN has been crashing on my Galaxy 10+ Note phone.

Would a “more capable” Galaxy Note not crash?

I am more than a bit leary of the BBN as I can find no user reviews. At first glance it seems like a Perfect enthusiasts system. The need something decidedly low brow OR so rock solid it NEVER crashes.

If cheap enough I would buy 2 to have a back up. But that may be expensive buying duplicate charts.

Re: Recommended Cockpit Platform

Mgrouch,

The last 3 minutes of that video were helpful.

I don’t need all the bells and whistles. But a rock solid OCPN platform that can display radar.

I have PyPilot and have FINALLY got it to work, I think, but the controls are full of glitches.

I have a router that translates NEMA 0183, NEMA 2000, Seatalk and puts out Wifi to my phone apps.

My old RM C-80 is now pretty much regulated to Radar Display, but the display is crapping out.

I am pissed at RM for a variety of reasons and do NOT want to support them. So even though my radar works I may need to replace it to get something that connects via a digital standard.

Re: Recommended Cockpit Platform

Alright then, exposing the depth if my ignorance here.

What is OCPN's " native" format? IOW where is it MOST stable?

I have OCPN running on a PC laptop, but don't use it in the cockpit.
I have OCPN running on a Galaxy Note 10+ phone but it crashed twice last week.
I believe it will NOT run on an iPhone or IPAD, correct?

Using BBN can I have a computer and then have it repeat to a hand held or tablet?
Or must I have the BBN computer provide the screen?

There are reasons for these question although they may seem obtuse.

The problem is I don't quite get all the possible combinations of software and hardware and how they marry with our cockpit.

BTW
Steel center cockpit boat
Center cockpit is very small, ergonomics is non-trivial.
Android iPhone on pedestal is frequently hit in moving around.
Current plotter is mounted in a backrest just rorward of the pedestal
