But I don't know the minimum version you need for manual compensation ...

Hello Tom
Compensation in 5 rounds successful!
But I have not figured out how to retrieve the compass version...

Re: Tactics Plugin

Now, nest step are wind vane calibration.
A few small tests yesterday, it is not conclusive, always, always errors, never margin of error reduced.
Pfff laborious

Re: Tactics Plugin

Hi there,

I implemented the averaging of TWS when reading polar data (e.g. for "Polar Speed" instrument). I'm still rounding TWA to the next full knot. I implemented a second routine with full averaging of TWA and TWS (it's available in the code, but currently not used), but I noticed no real difference while doing a live comparison, it's just more workload.
We don't show decimals for TWA anyway ...
It noticeably stabilizes the "Polar Speed" readings .
Furthermore the missing 2 $PNKEP-NMEA records are completed now.
New sources are on github, documentation is adopted as well.

BR,

Thomas

Re: Tactics Plugin

Thomas, thankyou for your efforts. I notice that Tactics is not in the plugin downloads page. Has it come out of beta stage yet? If so perhaps a request to pavel or dave would get it a spot on downloads.

Also I think your work should be featured on the news page, and that will happen, but right now we're pretty busy trying to uprade the website.

Would you be able to send me a word doc or a single page html with images of your user manual? I'd like to add it to the plugins.

Re: Tactics Plugin

Rick,

the code is pretty stable, but I started working on some new features last weekend, which I'd like to include into the first "official" release :
Polar display on the chart and inside the bearing compass :

Name:	Aufnahme2.jpg
Views:	162
Size:	89.3 KB
ID:	137813

This is just a first screenshot, there's VMG, CMG markers missing etc.

And then I want to create an instrument with the average wind direction as a vertical line, showing the wind amplitude on each side, with adjustable time for averaging.
It doesn't exist yet, but something like this ...

Name:	Aufnahme3.jpg
Views:	164
Size:	11.0 KB
ID:	137814
Purpose : show you when it's time to tack (you should tack when the actual wind direction crosses the average line).

I hope to finish this till end of the year or early January. When that's done, I suggest to release tactics_pi ...
As soon as I have something reasonable to show, I'll post here.

You can find the documentation on github, it's called tactics_pi.odt (I created it in Libreoffice, I don't have MS Word ...). I think you should be able to open it in Word. If not, just let me know, I can export it to html or docx then ...

BR,
Thomas

Re: Tactics Plugin

Hi guys,

just to give you an early impression and teaser what's coming next :

Average Wind instrument :

Name:	Aufnahme4.jpg
Views:	129
Size:	30.6 KB
ID:	138673
  • with the slider you can dynamically set the averaging time btw. 6 and 30 mins
  • the center line and value is the average wind direction
  • the values left and right are the min&max values in the average period
  • the thin noisy line is the real, live data
If you sail in puffy conditions and try catching the wind changes, the idea is to tack as soon as the wind veers away and crosses the average wind line... This instrument should help visualizing ...

Polar display on chart

Name:	Aufnahme5.jpg
Views:	129
Size:	11.3 KB
ID:	138674
  • It displays the Target-VMG angle markers up-/downwind (in blue) and also the Target-CMG angle markers (red) towards a waypoint.
  • Just change your heading and point the (short) blue heading pointer onto one of the markers ...

Easy access to chart overlay functions via menu

Name:	Aufnahme7.jpg

It still needs a couple of days more for testing and refinement ...
I'll let you know as soon as I'm ready to go.

Re: Tactics Plugin

Hi there,
I finished my works for now uploaded a new version of the plugin to github.

Changes :
  • lots of minor imporvements and bug fixes
  • you can quickly turn on/off all chart overlay functions via plugin menu (not only in the Preferences)

Name:   menu.jpg
Views: 252
Size: 19.0 KB
  • almost all preference settings have "ToolTips" now, a very short help/key note what it is about

Name:	tooltips.jpg
Views:	121
Size:	96.9 KB
ID:	139201
  • there is a chart overlay now for your polar 'ring', showing markers for Target-VMG angles up-/downwind (blue) and Target-CMG angles (red)

Name:   polar_overlay.jpg
Views: 287
Size: 28.7 KB
  • I created a new "Average wind" instrument, with adjustable average time from 6-30 mins
  • the instrument has its onw timer, so if you set it to 6 min, it's really 6 min, and does not depend on the NMEA data speed.Click image for larger version

Name:	avg_wind.jpg
Views:	122
Size:	51.8 KB
ID:	139202
It's meant to be an aid to decide when to tack in puffy conditions ...
  • 'Wind history' (in tactics_pi) also has its own timer now
  • there is a new instrument "Polar compass" which shows your boat heading, the actual polar curve oriented on TWA, all markers for Target-VMG/CMG angles, STW, Target-Polar Speed & Percentage, Distance to WP and WP name (if set).
--> Just change your course, and keep your heading pointer on one of the markers and you automatically sail the corresponding Target-VMG/CMG angle.

Name:	polar_compass2.jpg
Views:	125
Size:	38.9 KB
ID:	139204
  • complete rework of the Target-CMG calculation (CMG = "course made good", speed towards a WP) :
    - based on TWS/TWA and the course to the WP there may be 2 Target-CMG pointers (one port, the other starboard). The plugin now recognizes the better (faster) one, and the corresponding CMG marker is bigger size than the other, see screenshots above
    - implemented for the polar chart overlay, 'Polar Compass' and 'Bearing Compass'
  • documentation is updated and available on github. In the plugin root directory you'll find tactics_pi.odt / tactics_pi.pdf

Comments and bug reports welcome.

I developed with VC2013, wxWigets 3.0.2

I need someone to compile and test under Linux ... volunteers welcome

I'd call it a release candidate ...

BR,

Thomas

Do you want me to update Crowdin for translations?
Or - Do you take care of that yourself?
Or - Is it not yet ready for translations?
