How Much Weight Will the Dingy Davits Hold?

Been considering upgrading my outboard on my 11 ft Avon. Had a 15 HP 2 stoke Yamaha, Found a Honda 20 HP 4 stroke Honda (104lb) Just wondering if its too much weight for the davits.
Thanks,
Brian

I mount my outboard on an outboard bracket when not on the dinghy, that way it's not a consideration.

You would have to look at your davits ratings, they vary widely. Also consider the shock loads that can be multiples of motor weight.

Hi Brian,
Your davits won't even notice the difference. I've never heard of any cat sailor who takes their motor off the dink unless their doing a passage. Have fun heading north.
David.

It all depends on your davits, obviously!

Mine do fine with my 25 horse Mariner and 12' Avon dink. They are rated for 175 kilos each. I don't remove the outboard because it is remotely steered and thus a PITA. I have carried the dink in the davits in all kinds (!) of weather with no problems.

Thanks David

Removing the motor wasn't an option. Living down here permanently now selling real estate , but still on the boat. Need to buy you a beer if you ever passs through again.

Cheers,
Brian

Full Sail,

Why not e-mail FP customer service and see if they can give you the factory spec. on your davit capacity.

Re: How much weight will the dingy davits hold?

After talking to seller, the engine weight grew 20 lbs. did a little research online and ended up talking to Gregor Tarjan. What a great guy, I called to ask a question and he chatted me up about my boat, how much I liked, who I got it from etc. Anyway, he said I should have no problem. Thanks to everyone for their input

Full Sail,

Can you post the dingy davit weight capacity that they told you, so other Bahia 46 owners in the future will have that info also ?

He didn't give me numbers, I told him I had an 11 ft Avon and wanted to put a 20 HP 4 stroke Honda on it that the previous owner told me was around 120 lb. He told me it should be ok

Re: How Much Weight Will the Dingy Davits Hold?

We have a Libra (avon) Rib 3.1 mtr 95kg (209lb) and 15HP Yamaha Enduro 45kg (99lb).

I saw on the specs for the boat when it was commissioned (yes we are lucky to find these documents still in existence), that the the original owner paid extra to have the davits beefed up to take a heavy load. It also carries 3x solar panels.

Perhaps yours were done in a similar fashion.

Cheers

Re: How Much Weight Will the Dingy Davits Hold?

We seem to be doing well with the 11 AB and the 9.9 and a full 8 gal tank.
I jump in the dinghy once in a while to grab something out, it flexes a little with me in it.

Drilled thought the end plate with I added the panel mount and it is a very think section of tubing.

If you don't taco the tubes I'll upgrade to a 24...

Re: How Much Weight Will the Dingy Davits Hold?

From my experience with a 30 hp honda 4 stroke....... treat every tank of fuel as if you were putting the boat up for a year. The fuel additives keep the ethanol from destroying your carbs.

Yeah, ask me how I know.

Dont know about the 46 by my davits are rated for 600 lbs each. An FP 60 foot.
