Best Pure Sine Wave Inverter?

I need to purchase a pure sine wave inverter in the next few days.

I've spent countless hours researching this topic and I have come up with the Magnum Energy 3,000w MSH3012M Hybrid Inverter/Charger ($2200 USD) as the best choice for my needs.

This "hybrid" allows me to run larger loads with a small generator. When plugging in a Honda EU2000i for example, it will also pull power from the batteries to allow me to run my 16,000BTU A/C.

Does anyone know of a better choice out there?

Magnum is the best. I have a pure sine, Samlex power and I am very happy with it. I have a separate marine charger.

Magnum, Outback, Victron are all good names in inverters/chargers.

I have a power boat with 2 Magnum MS4024PAE for 8kw. I wanted to have 240v available all the time. (You don't need 2 inverters for 240v, one supplies 4kw.) The inverters auto start a generator if batteries are low. All power goes thru the inverters so switching from shore/generator to inverter power is seamless. I no longer run a generator when cruising and have an alternator for charging inverter batteries when running. At anchor I can go 2 days on my current batteries running a 2 door reefer. small freezer and lights.
Check ebay for lower prices.

Re: Best Pure Sine Wave Inverter?

Depends on what you want your inverter to do . If you want it to switch and control shore power or pick up where your batteries or generator leave off , then you may be best served by the brand names that were mentioned .
I don't give my inverter that much power over my system , but then again I don't charge with shore power either . My inverter just powers my ac outlets when I am not on shore power which is always . I switch it myself. If you want a bullet prove simple pure sine wave inverter go with a Vanner . These things are tough. I will buy another if mine ever fails, but i don't think that day will come . It just works , never hear it or notice it .

Just remember !! don't install any inverter in a hot engine room , kills them fast fast !

Regards

Re: Best Pure Sine Wave Inverter?

there are downsides to the magnum hybrid. all AC loads need to go through it for it to work, so all loads are able to run on the inverter. which is not always the best idea. so you need to manually manage loads better.

the victron's also boost but have 2 outputs, so you can have inverter and non inverter loads.

sounds great. do you need a separate control module or monitor for this system?

Re: Best Pure Sine Wave Inverter?

I vote for Xantrex. I installed a 3Kw unit for about $1200 off the net. It's a 120v unit, but you can "stack" them for more power or voltage to cover both legs of a 50 amp service to get 240v. It's been worry free ... not overcharging the gel house banks and I especially love its auto-switching capability. It also has other fancy capabilities that we don't currently use like "auto-gen startup" when the voltage drop is low on the house bank.

I am about to buy an inverter to run a couple small 110v appliances. I thought I read where pure sine wave may not be the choice to run appliances? Is there any truth to this?

fishsail, I think you heard it backwards.

A pure sine wave is best for appliances I do believe.

4kw MagnaSine is a great inverter, I have one in my home's solar grid tie/lithium backup system.

I have a cheapie sinewave inverter on the boat. Had it for several years, no problems.

Re: Best Pure Sine Wave Inverter?

They're called Modified Sine Wave Inverters (MSW) and they're all over the place.

For example:

Re: Best Pure Sine Wave Inverter?

I went on the Aims inverter web site and it has a great section of FAQ's, with very simple explanations of the differences of inverters and how to figure out capacities and battery requirements. looked like a great site for electrical handicapped folks like myself.

Re: Best Pure Sine Wave Inverter?

For a large inverter / charger like the one in the first post, plan on mounting it very close to the battery bank, and even then you won't believe the size of the recommended cables.
I have a Magnum 2812 and it has been flawless so far.
You will want the remote, you can't do much without it.
