Refrigerator Broke, Starving in FL. Help!

My refrigerator just broke yesterday and frozen food is my mainstay of provisioning.

I'm in Melbourne today and no marina here will take me. Starving. Lost $400+ worth of provisions.

I need to swap out the old (gas) refrigerator and drop in an electric as well as rent a car to provision, receive some solar panels to keep up with new electric demand, etc.

Any suggestions as to where I can stop?

Boat is 50' x 25' catamaran with no mast on it, so 15' is air draft.

Boat is NOT insured because interior isn't finished. No under writer would touch it until it's completely done. That may be a factor.

In Melbourne now, no marina can fit me. Heading north on icw.

VERY hungry. Eating random dry goods to survive.

Any ideas welcome, including boat ramps near anchorages where i can park a rental car overnight and hire people to help me shuffle refrigerators.

Docks strongly preferred though. Need end docks due to 25' beam.

help!!!

Municipal Marina?

They seem to have tight insurance regulations, no?

That's the one I'm eyeing.

Most marinas require liability insurance. Have you tried getting a liability only policy? It's cheaper too.
Do you have a dinghy? Then anchor or take a mooring when you can find a place with a dinghy dock (like Titusville).

Insurance may be the stopper. An unfinished boat is going to make them look twice, that's an extra risk for them. Uninsured it is a double huge risk for them.

As to food with no fridge...really, that was once considered normal. Suggest you may need insurance, in order to get into a marina, more than a refrigerator. Peanut butter and jelly, rice and pasta, fresh produce, tinned goods...It may not be what you are used to, but people have lived on it before, and for a couple of weeks, it can be done easily enough.

you can't tell it's unfinished outside. Looks like a VERY expensive boat out side.

Insurance wanted inside 100%.

Have a dingy and been at anchor for 6 mos in various spots.

Trying to imagine moving a refrigerator up to my 6'+ deck height from dinghy.

it'll end up in the water, I think

If there's no mast, any marina looking at it will ask what happened. Whether it is a wreck or a work in progress. A sailboat with no mast is "different", and most species either kill or eat (often both) anything that is "different".

Marinas? They don't want to know about "different", they want nice quiet cash cows.

you are picturing the wrong boat, my friend.

This is a show stopper. People stop what they are doing to film it everywhere i go.

People come to see it at anchor. It looks VERY expensive outside.

They debate if it's a power cat ot sail.

So.... any helpful information or just the usual?

Maybe I'll hire a local marine business to deliver refrigerator to decklevel at anchor

I don't know that area but given your goals? Any ICW cruising guide, or Active Captain on the web, can tell you what anchorages might be near you. That eliminates the marina problem. Then you just take your choice and if none of them has a car rental convenient to you, try calling Uber.

Re: Refrigerator Broke, Starving in FL. Help!

For some reason, I have seldom been asked if my boat was insured (it is) when stopping as a transient for a night or two. Maybe you won't be asked either if you just call and ask for a slip.

As for not having liability insurance, what if you are involved in a crash? What if it's your fault and you injure someone and they sue you for a million dollars? What if your boat catches fire and destroys a marina and several other boats?

I think it's irresponsible to not carry at least liability insurance. I would like to see it as a legal requirement.

I was thinking the same thing while reading this, in fact, I have NEVER been asked about insurance. Having said that, I suspect that is not the reason for the lack of availability, it's just a busy time of year. Last month we tried to find a single night or transient dockage for a friends boat in Miami, called more than a dozen marinas and nothing...

Have you considered a portable fridge / freezer, like an Engel?

Interesting. The times I've gotten liability only for a boat the finish of the interior never came up.
