I’m shocked that this thread has gone on as long and as strong as it has. I solute those who have kept it going.

Re: Why are lurkers not joining..

I wish there were more lurkers who are interested in learning more about sailing, the lifestyle, and the community rather than a few posters who think everything is a joke for their own private enjoyment. I have relearned why I had "ignored" a couple of prolific posters who are not lurkers. They should be or just post in a thread back and forth between themselves. I just re-ignored them. I un-ignored them a while back hoping I might learn something from them. Unfortunately, I have not.

As far as FB, twitter, reddit, et al pushing forums like this out, I certainly hope not. Reddit is terrible for this type of use. Twitter also, FB might be but it is looking like it may not exist in its current form for too much longer. I have deleted my FB account 3x now and will never go back. FB is creepy. I find CF really useful and would hate for it to disappear.

The only reason that I have a Twitter account is that an Internet Service that I resell uses twitter to post critical network, maintenance and status updates.
I never tweeted but I had a Senegal parrot that tweeted and he had quite a few followers. He was always talking about people he met and s..t on.

Dang, Gord. You are seriously good!

I remember my early lurking days on CF. Some of the comments still sting a bit but I also wanted to learn, which for me means putting myself out there and asking questions or commenting on things to see if other's have opinions that challenge (and also improve upon) my way of thinking about things. Mostly it's also knowing that participating means needing to grow a thicker skin.

Just like sailing. It's best NOT to have a thin skin. Mother Nature loves to deliver raging storms and big waves. It's just how it is in real life.

Re: Why are lurkers not joining..

Some of us ‘lurkers’ are naturally quiet types and just enjoy reading the threads of ‘posters’.

.....That and the fact I struggle to remember what day of the week it is so remembering a password to log in is virtually impossible..
Life is far simpler as a ‘lurker’ 😎

Re: Why are lurkers not joining..

As a long time lurker, seeing that this thread is 15 pages long made me reply without reading past the first page and skip to the end. First off, who has time to read fifteen pages? Some of you, those with large post numbers, seem to use this as a daily communication, which is great. I don't sit in front of a computer all day or even everyday. But I do like to look now and then at what's going on. I don't reply with comments or answer to questions mostly because by the time I see the thread the question is pages long. Even if I get a response to this entry it will be many post down the line before I see it. I do enjoy this site.

One popular sailing forum had posters with over 30,000 posts! What do they do all day?

I have seen the lurker, and it is me.

What do they do all day? Between toilet breaks and the occasional preparation of processed-food edibles, they look at a computer screen and type on a keyboard.

In the old days - pre Internet - they would either be watching TV, blabbing nonsense on a telephone, or hanging nightly at the local bar blabbing their opinions about this or that while consuming alcohol until a) their forehead hit the counter or b) the bartender said "You've had enough, go home" or "OK everyone, it's closing time". Or both.

I only post on this Forum as it was the first I ever joined in 2007.
I liked the community, the small boat expertise as I only had a career on big yachts and ships.

There are many members whom I consider as virtual friends that I'm comfortable joking and teasing with, so that is a fun social side.[emoji4]

Sorry if that bugs ExMaggieDrum, but that's just me.

I don't know if 7.8k posts in 11 years is prolific, I just know that it is a great venue to take my mind off of business or work issues.

Keeping your toes outside the door, so they don't get stepped on, is a normal part of Social interaction. Those that loose their cool and get upset, can only look at it as "their" failure

Opps.!!!
Boatie, I'm sorry the pic of the gal/guy in the small sailboat didn't copy with the text, because it was the pic to which i wanted to refer: I wish I could copy it out for a Christmas Card. Just liked it,

AND, must say I like your new avatar photo. I could understand the Wanderer, or the Fool, as some call him, but I like this new one, very cagey, too. Cheers, mate, and Merry, Happy, and Prosperous!

Ann

To quote Peter Sellers as Chance Gardner in Being There - "I like to watch"
