And, yeah, that channel is quite obvious! Seeing this footage makes me miss flying small aircraft & helo's something fierce.
If you want to inspect secluded anchorages Google Earth probably has a tad higher range than the drone....?

Perfect anchorage until someone's drone comes snooping. What's wrong with using a dinghy and giving a friendly wave to the people already enjoying said perfect place?

There are many different types of drones more suited to heavy winds but the Mavic is good for winds up to 20 knots and have hand recovered onto the boat single handed in winds at 16 knots before, main issue for when recovering drones are not to have wind gusts..... this makes recovering a bit harder.

The one good thing about the newer smaller drones are that you can launch and catch just using one hand.

Google Earth is a great tool but often out of date around here and does not cover most locations within the south china sea or high enough resolution to navigate by.

Thanks
RTH is not an issue on the newer drones, you can use this function to get back to the main proximity of the boat and then override the land sequence to adjust for the final few meter until you catch the drone,

Be advised, any drone near my boat will have multiple loads of lead shot coming from my huge catapult.

I don't know how we ever got along without them...

Tiny lead sinkers are great for holding drones to the bottom. Mine are about 1/8" dia. You can fit about 10 in the pouch of even a small slingshot.
The one I made holds 20 and I carry about 100 of those little "anchors".
Surely, this is me being "nice" on the forum.

I've got a little Rocna about three inches long that also opens bottles. Should be perfect for a drone. Now the question is how much chain. I'm thinking 300 feet of 1/64 G70.

Last time I checked catapults are illegal in NSW , are you admitting to have this weapon onboard your vessel in Australia?

Re: Find That Perfect Spot With Your Drone

Great idea for exploring! I am certainly not even slightly knowledgeable, but somewhere I've recently read about drones for the consumer market that will "automatically" (my word, so do put too much into it) return to the home base if contact with the controller is lost or the battery becomes low. I do not own one, and have never flown one so that is the limit of my information. I do not even recall the source, which could be anywhere from the internet to a magazine in a doctor's office.

I believe that is the case only if fitted with an arm brace.

Re: Find That Perfect Spot With Your Drone

I'm sure it's lovely technology, and fun, but if a drone comes over my boat and I am above decks, I will try to sink it! They're noisy; people invade others' privacy with them, and BEWARE!

Once you've invaded someone's privacy, do not expect them to tolerate the insult without action.
