Shrew - my apologies then. The Puddle jump is the least organized I could find. When you can leave from any port at any time to any place I don't call that "organized". However, your point is well taken. I know of no other way to gather data as us cruisers are an independent lot.

Re: Who is cruising the world

This sort of data and the varied data points are great off-season fun. Yet I believe the long-term changing data Jimmy Cornell keeps is probably more useful for gauging market-barter trends.

That admitted, however, more detail of the much larger seasonal pools ar sea would be more...and more.

Ideally, a "snapshot" census report could be done.

But much more practical would be a marina by island or country census-style report. For example, one census volunteer could do a marina over a week in February in the Caribbean, and forward the anon data for collating. Similarly in early July in Europe (ie, avoiding the annual summer holiday only crush).

These would need uniform one-sheet data, along with an info sheet and web-site link for further details as well as FAQ and followup queries.

I doubt that some commercial mag sponsorship for such a coordinated effort would be more harmful than constructive. YMMV.

Opinions? (Reiteration of the two lead sentences presumed, here)

Yes! Kinda like annual bird counts. All we’d need is some sort of central organization. Any takers??

Re: Who is cruising the world

Marina counts would probably not work either, cruisers are savvy, they prefer to anchor and avoid marinas if possible.

Reliable data could be border crossings / port of entry statistics along the major routes. I guess there are such for most countries, since the process is done more and more digitally.

Boat size corresponds more on the crew size than on cruising activities vs. whatever other boat usage.
Single-hander and couples often chose smaller boats for cruising than larger families or groups.

Re: Who is cruising the world

When I started the thread I didn't take it too seriously. Who really cares what everyone else does? Cruisers are such a varied lot it is very tough to analyze. If I drew any conclusion it would be that you can cruise in virtually any boat currently manufactured. Stay in season and within generally benign cruising paths. Prepare and maintain your boat and have fun. I think I found that while boat length is generally growing over time, it appears to be slower than I would have guessed. For example, the major manufacturers have very few models under 35 feet. I remember when that was big for Catalina and others.

Yeah... Like what we cruisers need is yet another "organization" tracking our movements, creating charts and graphs and doing statistical data analysis of more and more of our lives. The INTENT might start with anonymous data but mission creep will soon by nature begin to include personnel (and personal) details.

Go away - the lot of you super-inquisitive meddlers! Leave us to travel in peace and respect our decision to cut the mooring lines.

Oh, I’m with you. Normally I’m the one sounding these alarms, so it’s good to see I’m not alone . I just think you’re one step above me if you’re worried about a census on who and what types of boats are out there.

… but maybe you’re right to be wary. Many (most?) negative social developments start with the best of intentions.

yeah, i have been to go east. More cats than monos, Our 40 ft was smaller boat. It was upwind and downwind in challenging conditions, not your milk run. Overall people with cats seem to had better passage experience.

I was enjoying passages both ways A LOT. A must do thing for sailor. Yeah, go out of sydney harbour, there is more to life.

You caught me. I'm a member of the deep state. No data was harmed in the presentation of the tables. All the data came from three web sites. Let's look into their intent.
