Jeanneau 51 1991 - teak decks

Hello! Looking at a 1991 Jeanneau with teak decks that are shot. It seems they are glued. Does anybody have any knowledge with this? And removing shot glued teak... days of sanding or are there other ways? any info/experience would be great! Thanks, Ari

Re: Jeanneau 51 1991 - teak decks

What are the white areas? Are they actually worn through to the gel coat?
With no screws, the deck is simply a decorative non skid. If they are still adhered well and that is not gel coat showing, I would suggest that a couple days of belt sanding/ orbital sanding can make them nice.
If the black caulking is coming out, then stripping that and replacing and subsequent belt sand and other sanding can be pretty expensive and back breaking work. SWAG maybe $5k to have it done IF you can find a good independent guy to do it. I had it done 20 years ago on a 47 ft boat (screwed on decks) for $2500 from an independent worker.

Re: Jeanneau 51 1991 - teak decks

My year 2002 Jeanneau 52.2 (effectively the “MK2” of this 51) had screws hidden on the caulk lines. I removed all the teak decking and refinished the decks with painted non-skid. Be prepared for some likely core repair if there are screws….especially as worn as this teak is.
This is a big job either way and very expensive if you aren’t doing the work. Many are also going with a synthetic teak replacement these days… just wasn’t my cup of tea.

Re: Jeanneau 51 1991 - teak decks

Hi there we have a 2004 Bene with teak that we just removed. It is a real pain but doable. We used a combination of wood chiseles and a Bosch bulldog hammer drill. You will damage the deck underneath unless you are super careful. We tried to remove all the little screws that are used to hold it all together while the glue sets but we missed a bunch, the hammer drill blew right through them. We filled in the holes with epoxy after drilling them out and countersinking them, then called in a professional to reglass and paint. Miss the teak but don’t miss the teak. Hardest part was getting the glue residue off. We used a wire wheel on a power drill. If the boat is on the hard and you can stand at a waist height it makes it easier.

Cheers
