Lightbulb Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 419 Vs 389

We're trying to make up our minds between the two sizes.

Anyone have sailed either of these or both.

Pros/cons

THanks

Re: Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 419 Vs 389

I've sailed the 410 (not 419) and 389 recently. How do you expect to use the boat and where do you want to sail it? With how many people on board?

They sail very similarly. There's more of a sailing difference between the mid-size SO boats in how they are rigged than between the different sizes. For cruising you won't really notice the difference in hull speed from length and beam as they are so close; your sails and trim will be a bigger deal.

On the 410/419, the dual helms are much nicer for forward visibility than the 389 single helm. Dual helms usually come with dual rudders that are great upwind compared to the 389's single rudder, which likes to broach in a strong gust if you have too much sail up. But the longer/wider boat is obviously more to handle in a marina, and it is harder to handle in reverse when configured with dual rudders and a saildrive.

Since the 419 is no longer in production, you must be looking at a used boat. Which interior layout does it have? The two cabin, single head version is basically the same as the 389--you don't get more saloon or galley space, just longer staterooms. I found this to be not a great tradeoff for increased cost. The other interior variations are rather different in the interior and make tradeoffs you may want for a larger crew/more guests.
