Cruisers in Grenada - Hurricane Relief

You might want to post this on the Board:
http://www.ssca.org/hurrican.htm

Hurricane Ivan has devastated the island of Grenada. Reports indicate only 10% percent of homes are undamaged island-wide. Initial reports in the cruising community seem to have similar rates of damage. Approximately 10% of our friends with boats there are undamaged or minimally damaged. The remaining 90% of boats have damage ranging from missing shrouds, abrasion, wind generators lost, toe and rub rails torn off to dismasted, sunk, holed, aground, piled up in marinas or blown ashore. Some boats have yet to be located and are either under other boats, sunk completely, broken up or drifted out to sea. The current list of damaged or lost boats numbers 586, and this does not include boats that have not been found or all the boats in storage yards. One yard contains 180 boats, of which 170 have toppled over, many obviously dismasted as viewed in photos. The devastation is extreme. Many of these boats were the owners' fulltime home.

Currently the cruisers there are running out of food, water, gas and diesel for dinghies and generators, etc. Security is a problem due to looting and 24-hour watches are required. Cruisers there are exhausted. And the recovery process is only beginning. Private motor and sailboats from Trinidad are being loaded with vital supplies and making deliveries to the cruisers in Grenada. Lift cranes on barges are being arranged, as well as floating storage, to be able to lift boats that need it and to transport boats that are not seaworthy and take them to Trinidad for repairs.

You can imagine from this short report the financial burden is huge. Cruisers in the Trinidad cruising community as well as other individual efforts have partially paid for the deliveries that have been completed so far. Money is desperately needed to continue to provide for our friends, family and associates in the international cruising communities that have been affected. No food or supplies are available on land, and it is not yet known when supplies will again be available.

Currently Members Only Services in Trinidad, Jesse James owner and manager, is voluntarily coordinating purchase of needed items and locating volunteer private boats to bring deliveries to Trinidad with monies donated by cruisers in Trinidad. He has set up a bank account to accept more donations so he can continue to coordinate the relief efforts of cruisers in Grenada. Jesse is a long-term friend of the Caribbean cruising community. A better person to coordinate relief efforts does not exist. He has coordinated with Jack Dausend from Boaters Enterprise to maintain a posting of the accounts on his website ( www.boatersenterprise.com or www.theboca.com).

To see a preliminary list of boats involved and initial damage as well as to view some photos to see the destruction go to www.reservationsbvi.com/grenada and www.clarkescourtbaymarina.com. General relief efforts via international emergency relief organizations will go primarily to the local nationals, not the cruising community.
