Re: Copper Bow

They used to do that with entire wood hull ships. Very impressive! I wonder what it cost the owner and what % more resistance there is?

Re: Copper Bow

Interesting treatment. How's is the cladding adhered to the hull, epoxy or other?

Re: Copper Bow

The cladding was self adhesive - unfortunately not sufficiently sticky to hold the strips on for this application. We interlinked each strip as much as possible so that the leading edge of each was protected by the trailing edge of the one in front of it, and did the same upwards for the bow. Unfortunately the combination of speed and weight of the boat was such that when the owner took her from Gibraltar back to UK, significant chunks were ripped off. It looked like an initial rip caused sheets to fail. The owner had the boat out of the water and ripped the lot off, and used conventional a/f. I do not like to think what the cost was - the boat is a 75 ft leopard weighing about 30 tons. Took 4-5 of us a week to remove all the a/f down to bare GRP, and then fit all the copper.
