Which two threads were closed? I haven’t been paying much (if any) attention lately to climate change or political stuff, having completely lost interest in things and attitudes which can’t be changed.

The flat earth thread was closed after it meandered into a discussion of scientific certainty and by extension climate change, evolution, etc. However, it remained more civil that 95% of threads here and must have been closed on principal and not because of any particular bad behavior.

Not sure what other thread was closed.

Re: De-membering?

I have been here for a while, mostly just reading posts(without signing in) every day that were interesting, and ....did I miss something ( getting old) because I have not seen much that could be construed as offensive. Quite the opposite, this forum seems to be very well run...maybe I am just not paying attention?

It is, in my humble opinion, a very well run forum. But what happens here (and everywhere, really) is that there are some people who will say the metaphorical equivalent to "You're stupid," rather than showing the stupidity by attacking the arguments. A subset of those being attacked as stupid (or whatever) secretly fear that they might actually be, and get very offended.*

The offended then go all attack dog in the other direction, and it often escalates. It can be ugly, or amusing, or just boring, depending on your personality. The mods see it as violation, and words, posts, threads, and even people disappear.

The system here works very well. As best I can tell, this is the number 1 sailing/cruising site on the web.

*In my experience, people who are confident that a thing is false are typically amused, or at least, untroubled, rather than offended when accused of it. I mean, I imagine the bemused response, for example, if some newb came along and told estarzinger he was a moron about high latitude sailing...

Well Stu - you really surprised me with that quote! Funny how one thinks that they may be the only "old" rock&roller around anymore.

as a real Newby ( went by newbs in the navy) I ought to try that and see what he says. But then again I would be calling myself the same considering where I like to cruise.

My first boss had a nice sign above his desk that I never forgot:

All visitors to this office bring joy; some by entering and others by leaving...

A sign of a similar sentiment:

"Everyone is useful, no one is necessary".

Though I have known those who make me queston the "useful" premise.

Some of us even know we're too old for rock and roll, but too young to die.

(Now that's gonna be stuck in my head all day... off to find a JT record...)

Re: De-membering?

I too was astonished at the early shutdown of the flat earth thread. We were just getting to discuss "how we know what we know, or think we know," which has interesting logic implications...
On the other forum I inhabit (not a sailing one), a moderator will give a brief explanation of why the thread is being shut down. That way the guilty will be chastened, and the innocent will not be left wondering, "was it something I said?" That might be a nice feature.
