Is there no end to the ad madness?

I read recently in passing about somebody complaining about new video/audio ads popping up on CF, and I thought... Wowza... Are you kidding me??? Then it happened to me...

Next up, is we have an ad for a contest that:

Re: Is there no end to the ad madness?

Ads are now a part of life. The only way to avoid them is to live in a cave without outside contact. Even the halftime show at of the football game is now the "Verizon half time show".

Try your best to ignore them.

You must have read the advice in all the other ad threads by now. Download AdBlock and Ghostery and never think about these things again.

I got Ghostery goin' on, but haven't taken the AdBlock step yet... I just thought it was funny that CF would have the ad for the old contest...

Also, the "supporting member" status removes a mediocre amount of ad placement...

Re: Is there no end to the ad madness?

Be careful what you wish for. The problem is not the advertiser. It is the deliverer of the content that you are really frustrated with. The add is presented from the advertiser BY the web site, radio station, or tv station which you're seeking your FREE entertainment.

You pay for your internet connection, however someone has to pay for the CF internet connection. These web pages are hosted on servers. This is hardware which requires upgrades, repairs, and electricity to run. Someone has to pay for that as well.

Do you really want to pay a membership access fee to EVERY site you visit? (Google, MapQuest, IMDB, Wikipedia, CF, etc....) Even a nominal $10/yr subscription would start to add up.

If some "Joe Business" wants to pay the site money to pump an add in the margin that we can ignore, then so be it. This is a 1st world problem, if this is our biggest challenge, life is pretty good.

Re: Is there no end to the ad madness?

I prefer targeted ads over general TV style ads for things I'll never buy. I do a lot of research before buying and appreciate added information. However, I find it annoying that the targeted ads continue after I've made my purchase. It would be nice if we could update our "product interest profile" so that sellers could educate us that than boring us to death.

Re: Is there no end to the ad madness?

Happy you're going about this all wrong. You need to use this to your advantage. Since most of the ads are targeted, be sure to visit some entertaining web sites and then the ads that come up will be much more pleasurable.

On the other side of that if you are bored, go onto a friends computer and be sure to look up embarrasing grotesque sites that their mother would be ashamed of. Then sit back and watch why they can't figure out why all of the ads coming up might get them arrested in some countries

Re: Is there no end to the ad madness?

This may be true for most sites, but I am a member of a very good motorcycle site that has no adds, or membership fees.

Supported by voluntary contributions.

Re: Is there no end to the ad madness?

Interesting for me that this is simply training my eye to never look at anything that looks like and add all useful content has a simple text code.

I think the whole concept of adds is broken for the most part. Pretty easy to not even see them. If it pays for CF being here I'm pretty happy with it being so easy to ignore.

Re: Is there no end to the ad madness?

Hey it's not just the adds, this site used to "remember me" for days if I checked the box when I logged on, now it can't do so for hours.
Almost every time I open the link I have to sign in again, and get the add for the news letter. Sometimes it takes two or three attempts !
Still I guess it's maintaining my logon skills.

Re: Is there no end to the ad madness?

Perhaps turn this around and describe what kind of ads are acceptable to you? "No ads" of course is not a realistic answer. It takes time and money to run a website.
