Some Things Not Showing in 'New Posts'

I have noticed that often threads I have either commented in or viewed previously do not show up in my listing when I choose the "new posts option" even though there are new (or newer) posts.

Is this a settings issue on my end?

Your own posting isn't "new", to you - you've already seen it.
It will appear "new" to everyone else, who hasn't viewed it.

right, but as an example, your post (this last one) didn't show up as new in my list either

If you read Gord's post here in this thread before you opened New Posts, it would not show up there - at that point, there were no new posts to the thread since you had last opened it.

right, I understand all that. This time your post did show up in the list. But when I clicked "new posts" before reading gords post it did not show up.

(if I were reading the posts before clicking new posts, I really wouldn't expect them to show up in the list )

Well, Gord's a special case - after 10,800+ posts, there's little that's new! (Sorry, Gord, couldn't resist. )

Try clicking on the quick links drop down menu (two slots to the right of the new posts link) and then selecting 'todays posts'. This will give a complete list of all threads that have been updated since your last log in, including any you may have posted to.
