I was hoping you woud comment on this again, Mark. Richard Henderson has recommended this in Singlehanded Sailing. Even before the problem in Somalia there was enough political unrest to make the Cape of Storms worth the difficulties. I'm sure now he would be adamant.

January and February are the times it is best for passaging through these troubled waters. The westerlies will have moved south and be less likely to produce steep seas opposing the Agulhas current. He still warns the southeasters can be "extremely boisterous". It is an intense and dangerous passage but a short one. Singlehanders may want to take on crew.

Four Americans Killed on Yacht Hijacked by Pirates

Published February 22, 2011
| FoxNews.comDEVELOPING STORY: Four Americans aboard a yacht hijacked by Somali pirates have been killed, Fox News has confirmed.
U.S. forces responded to gunfire aboard the yacht Quest at approximately 1 a.m. Tuesday, but discovered all four hostages had been shot by their captors. Despite steps to provide life-saving care, all four hostages died of their wounds.
“We express our deepest condolences for the innocent lives callously lost aboard the Quest,” said Gen James N. Mattis, U.S. Central Command Commander in a news release.
Two pirates died during the confrontation and 13 were captured and detained, along with two pirates already in custody. U.S. forces also found the remains of two other pirates already dead aboard the vessel and believe a total of 19 pirates were involved in the hijacking.
The yacht Quest was hijacked on Friday off the coast of Oman and U.S. forces had been closely monitoring the vessel.
Pirates have increased attacks on ships off the coast of East Africa, but Americans have rarely been targeted. The last attack against a U.S. crew -- in 2009 -- ended with Navy sharpshooters killing two pirates and rescuing the ship's captain.
This is a developing story. Please refresh for additional updates.

This is really, really a tragic and sad ending.... Sounds like there were 19 of those scubags on the boat... they only shot and killed a few of them.. the rest should walk the plank and be left for the sharks to carry out justice... instead we will probably cart them back to the states and spend millions on putting them on trial and then feeding and housing them for the rest of their misreable lives... just disgusting...

any small boat passing from the indian ocean into the suez canal should probably have their head examined. seriously the chances of big problems OR DEATH are just too great. IMHO.

I'll have to agree with part of this. The whole area is a powderkeg waiting to blow. Unrest could easily spread to the other oil producing Islamic countries, and leave us with a 70's era embargo. I'm not sure I would trust the Yemini Navy any more than the pirates. To them WE are the invaders.

Re: Another Yacht Has Been Pirated

I was using the “collective” possessive pronoun (our), and would certainly include Cornwall in the group ownership of the oil. I’m less certain that Tampa/St Petersburg should be included.

Re: Another Yacht Has Been Pirated

Ive been flicking through the various news channels i have here, Sky UK, CNN, BBC as well as Spains news channels, There is virtualy NOTHING in regard to the SV Quest incident? I am watching the Real Madrid game but have flicked back several times! Is this because of the Earthquake in NZ and the Libya problems?? Seems really strange that there is not more being reported on it?? Is there some sort of a news blackout? Makes you wonder if something is going on?
