Thread not locked yet? Ok, here's the latest...

Norfolk seeks contractor to remove Irene-wrecked ship | HamptonRoads.com | PilotOnline.com

If he has a military retirement, the city will be able to garnish it to get their money back. That's why there are so many EZ credit places here in Norfolk. The vendors all know that Uncle Sam will make the military members pay up whether they able to or not.

You would know better than I then. As a former active duty guy I saw many of my less financially inclined shipmates have their wages garnished for all sorts of reasons (alimony, child support, delinquent car loans, etc...), but retirement pay may enjoy some special protections against garnishment that I am unaware of.

I am not sure retirement enjoys special protections..... but garnishment isn't just a whim ...the town would have to jump through a lot of hoops...legal bills might exceed the cost of an excavator and dumpster.

First time posting, first time reading this - good site. Too bad this guy is the brunt of the discussion but....for whatever reason he made an incredibly bad decision! We all have made bad decsions (most not as incredibly bad as this one!) in our sailing lives - the difference is that some of us learn from them and some of us don't!

Remember - "We all start out with 2 bags when we start sailing - one is full of "Luck" and the other is a bag labelled "Experience" and it is empty, as we sail along in life we take out "Luck" when we need it and move it to the "Experience" bag - the sailor who is found out to be "S.O.L." and holding an empty bag of "Experience" is truly screwed!!!"

Sail on and keep filling that "Experience" bag as you WILL need it one day!

Bearsails!

Every day plenty of experienced boaters make bad decisions....experience like luck is only part of the puzzle of life....

Go to the VA and not pay for your services or prescriptions and see how long it takes for them to garnish your wages. If they can do it, then so can any other creditor.

I still can't get past his 'logic' in passing up the anchorage inside Willoughby Spit for the north side of the spit, or why he even left Portsmouth and the middle reach area, both have good holding and are MUCH better protected than when he went to.

He might have been sailing for 20 years, but his decisions look pretty amateurish and I'd dread having him in the same anchorage as myself. This guy is one bad decision after another.

Experience is that quality that one achieves just after one REALLY needed it!

20yrs sailing/owning a sail boat does not = experience...
Sadly many think it does... along with bits of paper that are bought and paid for....

This guy's already been arrested twice for public drunkenness and damage to property since the boat ran aground. Sounds like sailing in a hurricane is not the first or last bad mistake he is going to make.
