obviously by not keeping a proper lookout. that is a gimme

but there is a far higher onus on a fully crewed state of the art warship to detect a medium size yacht at a reasonable distance...rather than moments before a collision as in this case.

iow they both failed...but imho the failure of a professional crew is far far worse than the failure of a solo amateur. the fact that the professional crew was a warship - supposedly the 'best of the best' just makes it worse & unforgivable

cheers,

^^^^

You're saying that one can expect a sailor to act like a wafi, but not people on a warship?

Hmmm.

Re: Dismasted by an aircraft carrier

pardon my ignorance (i'm only a sailor) but i'm not entirely sure what is a 'wafi' ?

but i think i get the drift...and (without excusing the failure by said yotie) the answer is most definitely 100% YES...i believe we are all entitled to expect a higher standard of performance from the team of 2000 highly trained & equipped naval crew than fm a solo yotie

don't feel this is unreasonable

cheers,

WAFI: Wind Assisted F'ing Idiot

Sailboat with a stupid Skipper, or possibly all sailboats, depends on who's using the term.

I made the same assumption once upon a time, by Adelie is the boat name, not the poster's name.

Re: Dismasted by an aircraft carrier

While I have no personal knowledge of such things, we are frequently advised here on CF that merely obtaining a skipper's ticked of minimal tonnage will cause you to be held to a higher level of responsibility in a court situation. If that is true, it should be FAR truer that the crew of a major navy's major capitol ship would be held to the ultimate level of responsibility and seamanship.

I add my voice to those who are aghast at the watchkeeping on the carrier. However, the solo sailor was clearly failing in his duties at even the most basic level.

A kinda unbelievable event IMO, but there it is!

Re: Dismasted by an aircraft carrier

If they were on exercises and had a lot of equipment on and tween decks they may be fairly limited in the amount of dodging they can do.

Possibly true, but a liberal application of five blasts from their doubtless massive whistle just might have averted the collision, even if they couldn't dodge themselves. How come no hoots?

true...but there is no suggestion that CdG was carrying out any exercise...and if she was, then you would expect escort vessels

cheers,
