Absolutely especially when it looks like the aircraft carrier approached the yacht from aft.

Re: Dismasted by an aircraft carrier

Naah, we need to give up on this Colregs nonsense and allow every country to write their own regulations and nave a legal right to only comply with them.

You gotta be joking, there's one set for everyone so that we can all learn them and have a chance to comply with them, even the military.

...which makes the need to maintain a "secure perimeter" (or whatever the Navy's phrase is for not letting any vessel come alongside before being sure of it's intention) unnecessary...in Yemen of all places!!!

Before 9/11, and not in a conflict zone. Local merchants frequently come alongside ships to sell their wares. Cole was the first out-of-the-blue terrorist attack on a USN ship - the USN and other navies have learned from that, and now have force protection measures in place.

...an excuse maybe for our "forest"-"Navy" (we had a, now decommissioned, gunboat on the Danube!), but for a battlehardened one?

Go on - tell us what conflict Yemen was involved in, in the year 2000.
As for the rest of your post - is it in code? Stream-of-consciousness rambling has me confused.

yes and it let a vessel approach it

3 visits: 1/87, 1/93 & 1/99: before each visit some sort of uprising/rebellion/"war" - bulletholes everywhere. Been there, seen it..

If the sailors on the Cole had opened fire on all arabs driving around the harbour in boats, there still would have been a "USS Cole incident" but it would have had a whole different connotation. And a bunch of US sailors would have faced a firing squad.

And yet history has not recorded any of these so-called "uprisings." And having read "Voyage of the Northern Magic", who were berthed across the harbour from the Cole, I don't recall the author describing Aden as being riddled with bullet holes. That would be a shocking oversight, as her narratives otherwise painted vivid pictures.

Perhaps your memory is faulty; it was a long time ago. Anyway this was a diversion, but it serves no purpose, and it's boring. I'm done - out!

Re: Dismasted by an aircraft carrier

How did this even get to a conversation about the USS Cole?

Oddly enough you choose to believe what you do because you haven't read about it - obviously if you haven't read about it then it couldn't possibly be true. But the guy that has been there three times couldn't be right because you believe differently. Really???? I have read about it and can confirm his recollections. So instead of not believing him perhaps you should do some more reading?
