It is not arbitrary. I would suggest you are just being argumentative.

OK so in a roundabout way you did I suppose . As I understand your answer the government keeps the excess tax collected. And the petrolium companies recoup all the levied funds at the pump.
End result the government makes money the oil companies make money and you pay higher price at the pump .
Meanwhile the Antarctic has begun freezing again.

ALL taxes collected results in lower taxes. It is revenue neutral. It cannot be more clear.

Yes winter is coming on in the Antarctic go figure.

Meanwhile, science progresses.

A carbon tax is collected from fossil-fuel companies upon the first sale at the mine, wellhead or port of entry.

The money collected via this fee would be distributed to the public as a monthly “dividend” or “green check.” Distributing all of the revenue equitably to households will ensure that families can afford the energy they need during the transition to a clean energy future, and it should help win public support for a rising carbon fee.

There is no government revenue and no corporate profit.

British Columbia has such system.
PULEEEEZZZEEEE. what balderdash. whose idea is this, a career polytishun?? there is no way to tax the world and have it be a good thing. get real.
people will be punished for using air conditioners or barbequing and they will be punished for whatever polytishuns wish us to be punished for... why do you think a tax on of all things, that which trees use is good thing-- merely sets precedent for screwing down more taxes.
damn some folks will believe anything.
and what part of planetary change and constants being change do you all not understand?? our lovely planet is always gonna change--climate, appearance and otherwise. our job is to see we donot suffocate it in our ****. yes ****. plastic, your old car tires, ypour plastic plates and shampoos and conditioners and body lotions--all of which are toxic...as well as detritus of manufacturing and other corporate spawned bs that corporate needs to clean up behind selves. tax corporate. make them responsible for their actions. but as a carbon tax?? hell no. just income tax em and make em clean their own asses.
we the people are screwed bad enough. whatever laws and wierdnesses that are made in the name of carbon only sets precendent for further oppression of humans to the benefit of corporations which already receive both corporate liberties as well as individual status. tell me this isnt wak. you are all yapping about the aftereffects of cutting all the trees and burning rainforests, and you are focused on the bs detritus of humanity.
humans are most incredibly ignorant animals.

how ye gonna work this taxation? when a volcano blows, you gonna tax that bitch?? you gonna place the blame on whom??? our planet is undergoing its changes. we actually can no longer restore the rainforests that need to be restored. why?? people live there. .oops. who did that?? who burns the rainforests so there is no ground cover and no canopy?? these are the needed things that humans are corporately removing. and donot forget the nations without huge resources and money. co2 is needed for trees and plants to grow. those provide oxygen for us to breathe. plant trees. m any trees. bushes and other green things. hell--grow your own foodstuffs.
how is that lovely tax you folks desire gonna help the planet??
is it gonna prevent further development? is it gonna pay the earth for her damages done by volcanoes and other means?? is it gonna prevent the seas from rising??
hell no.
not for a minuet.
so what is it to gain our changing planet???
why not concentrate these balderdash ideas into something that would make you feel better and mebbe also help our lovely young planet in its changes? pick up your detritus and remove it from planet. individually. bend down and c=scoop that ****. it is there and you walk over it. every day. you donot bend down to remove the crapyou see on streets. and you want a tax on folks for what reason?>????
personally, i am looking forward to the rising waters. i have been waiting for this since 1958, when i first read of htis phenomenon . yup 1958. new york world telegram posted a filler with these tidbits-- 2025 was the date of expected higher water.
taxing is a chikkinshit move. and who is the tax base?? nations without dough or resources?? usa?? south america?? europe?? africa??
and how the blazes ye gonna collect the dough and distribute it... greed conquers all. global warming was invented by a greedy nonscientific career politician. his pockets would be lined with gold due to his grand idea.
go figger.
and you support htis balderdash?
just clean your messes and make sure you vote to prevent further corporate destruction of this lovely planet.
move to mars.
taxes?? balderdash. change happens. deal with it or find a realistic manner in which to clean up after our red headed step parents, aka corporate, without dragging into play all the impoverished and famine riddled citizens/nations of this planet. a better way to fix earth would be to feed the people who are not able to find ready food. and how is that to be done?? it cannot be , as greed, as usual, rears its ugly head and the foodstuffs are waylaid into stores held by the rich. and you think taxes for a planet are cool??
puleeeze.
you may as well tax the planet, itself, for its changes.
paying a tax to be redistributed to people?? sounds a lil socialistic for capitalistic usa. reality says that tax would soon be misdirected and all funds are in one person or corporations pocket. this was designed with wealth in mind--not planetary benefit.
legislators would immediately seize the funds for hteir own incomes and benefits packages.
it is wonderful to keep yer head in the sky, but at least be realistic and reasonable about it.
socialism is set up differently than is capitalistic usa. canadians pay high taxes for everything, yet everything they gain is covered, and appears free.
the same folks spewing taxes are same folks dissing socialism in usa.... ,make up your minds--which do you want-- socialism, or capitalism?? remember, with wrong manager, socialism rapidly becomes something very ugly. just look at venezuela as an example.
in times of famine and poverty and troubles, intro of a new tax is not a popular idea. what is ideally meant for corporations will soon be used to oppress the people who think they will be gaining from the plan. be real. that aint gonna happen.
this aint utopia, it is planet earth. deal with the changes and move onward. remove power from corporations. yes people can do that. get on it.

oh yeah--seems polar axes are changing. mebbe we need to place weights on planet to prevent baahstaahn from becoming new north pole.....(makes just as much sense as the rest of this poo)

lol and where doyou think the revenue for these taxes is gonna originate?? is from the prople--higher pricing, yada yada..

You can thanks the GOP for politicizing the term "Climate Change".
Frank Luntz Memorandum to Bush White House, 2002

"Voters believe that there is no consensus about global warming within the scientific community. Should the public come to believe that the scientific issues are settled, their views about global warming will change accordingly. Therefore, you need to continue to make the lack of scientific certainty a primary issue in the debate, and defer to scientists and other experts in the field."

"The scientific debate is closing [against us] but not yet closed. There is still a window of opportunity to challenge the science."

" It’s time for us to start talking about “climate change” instead of global warming

1. “Climate change” is less frightening than “global warming.” As one focus group participant noted, climate change “sounds like you’re going from Pittsburgh to Fort Lauderdale.” While global warming has catastrophic connotations attached to it, climate change suggests a more controllable and less emotional challenge. "
If it's the GOP then they did the extremists a favor. Every winter when it gets cold outside, it gave them the excuse..."See...there's no global warming". Then when Texas was under water..."opps"
Please note, I said Texas.

Here it is again
What happens to all the tax funds that are collected when the petroleum is not used to manufacture fuel, but rather in the production of plastics and other polimers .
I never saw an answer either, incl. in Jack's most recent replies. Probably because it raises good questions that suggests answers that don't fit the propaganda needed to persuade the populace. Simply put, the stated goal is to reduce carbon emissions by lowering demand for consumption with artificially inflated prices due to taxation. But as far as I know, using fossil fuels to produce polymers doesn't produce harmful CO2 emissions. Or does it? I suppose one way to analyze might be to look at how much each barrel of oil is devoted to polymers and other products which don't require burning in their production. That might then be the govt's "cut" -- or economic inefficiency/waste I should say.

The counter-argument perhaps is the "cost" of disposal of all those plastics. But doubtful we could actually have an intelligent back & forth with a poster so single-mindedly & robotically devoted to only one point of view.

The flooding in Texas was due to a weather event called El Nino
Also most of Texas was under some level of severe drought but no longer near as widespread.

I suppose it can be spun either way.
