Earth Quake in Haiti

Haiti was hit by a 7.0 earth quake to day.
It looks like Port-Au-prince was hit hard.

There isn't much worse that can happen down there.

About all we can do is pray....anything else is too political.

Absolutely,

This is about the last thing they need.

Prayers are with them.

Sorry about the link. I'm still trying to figure out how to post things other than text.

Lets see if this works. Scott

Maybe there is something we can do. Are there any sailors out there with the skills and equipment to set up a radio network? There are so many people waiting to hear from friends and relatives, perhaps they can help. I might be overly optimistic, but perhaps there are some land-based operators in Haiti with power who could help relay a few words. Here’s the first one: We’re looking for Emmanuel (Manny) & Marie Maneger. They were staying at 4 ReulleJean Phillippe Port au Prince, but might have been in Santo at the time of the quake.

Any effort would be appreciated.

Thats a good Idea Jim.

I'm thinking about going there to help out, but I don't have any contacts in Haiti.

Is there any one on this form that knows the area and can help me out with some information?

Or maybe some one in the area that can do some research?

Thanks,
Scott

It wouldn't be difficult to make contacts there, but you might want to start by calling the established relief organizations, Red Cross, Salvation Army, Mercy Corps... Violent crime was a problem before the earthquake. Chances are it's not getting better now. I've thought about going myself. If I go, it will be with an organization.

Yep,
I just read that they have shut down the air port to every thing but relief planes. And the port is messed up also.

I've contacted a medical relief group that is planning on going in on a military plane. If they have room, I'll join them.

If you have any Medical training and are interested, PM me and I'll give you the contact information.

You guys can help.

Donate $10 to the American Red Cross for Haiti via text. Just send "HAITI" to 90999

The $10 will show up on your cell phone bill, you can also goto the Red Cross website to donate.

DERA* & SATERN* radio operators are helping to provide vital emergency communications in Haiti. Their websites have situation reports.

Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Response Association (DERA)
DERA International - The Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Response Association

Salvation Army Team Emergency Radio Network (SATERN)
SATERN

Evidently, the following frequencies are in use for earthquake-related traffic, and should be kept clear unless you are able to provide requested assistance:
14265 (SATERN); 14300 (IATN), 7045 (IARU Region II) and 3720 (IARU Region II) kHz.
Additional frequencies may be activated on different bands at different times of day, so be sure to listen carefully before transmitting to make sure you are not interfering with emergency traffic.

*SATERN: 14.265 MHz Primary Daytime. 7265 and 3977.7 KHz evening and night

We just heard that Manny has been found. He, his wife, and brother are all OK. Unfortunately, the family did lose some loved ones, and some are still missing, but Manny and his wife are now waiting to return to Florida. Thank you for your efforts.

LeAnn Morris Pliske, a charter broker with The Sacks Group in Ft. Lauderdale, is working with a Haitian charity that supplies orphanages much needed supplies. If you have child-appropriate supplies, including clothing, blankets, food or formula, please consider bringing them to our networking event* tomorrow night. LeAnn will be there with a truck and bins to collect the donations. Cash is always welcome.

* The Triton Networking Event: On the third Wednesday this month (Jan. 20, 6:00 - 8:00 PM), The Triton is heading back to Pirate Republic Bar in Ft. Lauderdale to network with the friendly guys at TowBoatU.S.
Pirate Republic is the old Shirttail Charlie’s (400 S.W. Third Ave., just west of the railroad bridge on the south bank of the New River).
The event will be downstairs around the pool and bar area with music by the YES boys.
