On any electronic chart, the choice can be made on the units of measure. Most of the world uses meters.

On another point:

How was the blond knucklehead able to scrape together enough cash to purchase the boat and a years supply of food? Is there a Mr or Mrs Moneybags being this entire fiasco?

Is it possible that the 'tiger sharks' were in fact killer whales? They certainly work in pods and rear their young. Might they have smelt the dogs and thought they were seals? Add a little romanticised twaddle and you get that part of the story...

Which implies fish instead of mammal, more precisely subspecies of the Carcharocles megalodon.

I guess their life insurance thoughts were: there are always cute strong hungry sailors around, if something goes wrong. You only need a VHF, a bikini and a nice smile, if in trouble - and a steak / some pasta to offer....
They should've asked a man for directions. Or how to work the O.N. - O.F.F. switch on their EPIRB.

Too bad they ate through 1 year of food in 5 months - they could've drifted all the way to Japan. But with nothing to do all day but eat, it's not surprising.

(But seriously, I think the whole thing was a stunt to get a book deal. Who provisions 1 year of food for a 3 week voyage? And look at the fouling on the port side: they were sailing at hull speed for a substantial time on a starboard tack.)

If they were sailing a hull speed, the mid-ship fouling would be the low point.

The pattern shown suggests that they were moving at 1/2 hull speed.

StuM remember it is a sailboat therefore when on a tack at hull speed it would be somewhere between 15° and 20° heel so would have to apply wave form to the diagonal at the 18° heel angle ( approximately)

Wow. OK. No lack of attention to detail here!

I think the point is: for a significant amount of time, they weren't drifting. Even that part of their story seems bogus.

it's similar to my Spencer in design and size. My Spencer locks in at 18° on broad reach for hull speed. ( I'm also a retired shipwright)
