I heap ridicule & am open to all and any libel & slander litigation! including from people that believe the "story": you are either trolls, have not the slightest idea of open-ocean sailing or...(oops, litigation-danger!)
Phew , more speculation , don't they ever get bored , or maybe have nothing better to do .Brave talk , I wonder if or when this story is ever validated would you be so brave in the face of a solicitors letter .

Hey guys, calm down - it's not worth it.

So much effort for the 2 Dogs and their Dingbats...
The tread is longer then their journey already.

Re: HI->Tahiti Dingbats found after 5 months

I'd like to offer up a theory that this is perhaps a case of "soft kidnapping".

I think it is pretty clear that Blondie had an idea of what she was doing... She mentioned that she had some experience, and correctly provisioned for at least five months. Her boat was outfitted with all the appropriate communication and safety equipment, which one might not have if they didn't have at least some inkling on how to operate it.

So, Blondie is preparing for a cruise, and wouldn't it be nice to have some company? It gets pretty lonely as an adventurous soul, and don't we all just want to be loved? She meets the other woman at a bar, enthralls her with stories of her failed acting career, stories of traveling, and reasons for moving out to the Island. After spinning some yarn, Blondie asks "You know... I'm planning on taking a quick hop over to Tahiti next month, wouldn't it be romantic if we just flew off together?"

New love is naive, so OL(other lady) says "of course dear! but I have no experience, so I'm trusting you. Is it really safe?"

"Well normally it can be dangerous, but I've reenforced my boat with an extra 6 tons of fiberglass!"

Now they are leaving port, and those who've been at sea remember how freaking huge waves can look, even in a standard storm. A little exaggeration on Blondies part(remember, she is the "captain", protecting her new GF) and OL is even more in love.

Eventually Blondie realizes that she needs to stretch this month long trip into as long as possible. Maybe they were on the way back already? A few more small lies here and there... Sabotaging the antenna on her watch at night so you can pan pan all you like, but no one will answer.

Laying together on the sole to hide from sharks? Sounds comforting, especially if you know you aren't in real danger. Having someone looking at you like you save their life every day? I'm sure you can imagine how that feels.

And then eventually, the Japanese report your position to the Navy. Damnit.... I'll just sulk in the cabin. Notice which one of them is on deck blowing kisses to those navy studs(OL). Blondie has 24 hours to come up with a plausible story that includes all the lies she told her victim.

Honestly, sounds to me like a lonely cruiser conning a naive landlubber into a 5 month journey. I kind of feel bad for both of them, and I doubt it was done with the goal of getting a book deal or Oprah appearance... Honestly, Blondie would probably have rather that none of this got out.

At least that is my take on the whole thing.

lets see I am a retired shipwright. ( somewhat qualified)
by their own words when interviewed the bolt broke and spreader failed ( sure looked intact in the pictures)
currently I actually have and sail 3 different boats a 24 ft Islander , a 30 ft Columbia defender , and a Spencer s42. All of which have made numerous offshore passages.

Re: HI->Tahiti Dingbats found after 5 months

No recent follow-up news on this couple since doubts proliferated bout their story, but I missed these two tidbits along the way. From a Time Magazine report:

"They were thousands of miles in the wrong direction when a Taiwanese fishing vessel found them. Towing the sailboat damaged it further, but Appel swam to the Taiwanese vessel to make a mayday call."

Excuse me?

"The sailboat was abandoned at sea, but the two women are hoping it will be found and they can repair it. If not, Appel said they want to build an “unsinkable and unbreakable boat” and set out for Tahiti again.

“We still never got to see the 20,000 islands, so I think that would be the most fantastic trip for May of next spring,” she said.

They're want to build an unbreakable unsinkable boat in six months. Good luck with that. But I guess given their modus operandi they don't need a motor or rigging or sails so that does simplify matters.

Yet another bit of the story that makes no sense.

It would be a nod to the voice of ignorance should one elect to slight a sailor based on the size of a boat.

This is not such case. We have two fools and liars. They've proven that- not the navy, not the coast guard, not this forum.

...my gosh, what has happened to those from the land of William Wallace, and likely descendants of those that raided Lindisfarne? The cinematic adventures abound with stories of the brave, intelligent Scots...now traded kilts for skirts.

Rolling in an ocean swell. No sails up or sailing. Just rolling, and rolling, and rolling...till you can't take it anymore and you call to be rescued

Thank you Jim. Finally, another brilliant mind (or simple one...) who has the answer to the mysterious fouling pattern...
