L'Etoile du Nord, Chesapeake, VA.... At Grand Cay harbor, Abacos

Folks,

Does anyone know about this beautiful boat? We stopped at Grand Cay harbour a few days ago and the locals said she had been found by the reef; abandoned... She appears to have damage to her rudder and obviously the dismasting but seems to be very much intact in every other sense. The assumption around Grand Cay is that they got 'rescued' by the Coast Guard. I checked online and it seems the owner may be someone from Virginia Beach area; a H. Kim. Just thought I'd try here since there are likely numerous Chesapeake Bay sailors in the forum...

Fair winds,

Sailndive

I am so sorry for this: I accidentally deleted your email - it popped up just when I hit delete for some others and it was included - would you please resend? Thanks!

Hey I know the owner or previous owner and what happened. Glad to see she's back at sea! There should have been a new life raft on board her as well

jacob30,
I would love to know more about her, anything you are interested in, or able to, share would satiate a lot of curiosity. New Mast and rigging are sitting in packing material along with a pile of other items, no life raft though. We got her from the third owner since her solo trip at sea. Dream boat of ours to say the least. Please pm if you feel like or i can send an email address.
thanks,
Jamey

I'll post a few things here. She lost her mast 342 miles from the bahamas after departing from Bermuda. Prior to loosing her mast she experienced seas to 25 feet enroute to Bermuda and winds to 35+ knots. I suspect that her rigging was weakened from the Norfolk to Bermuda passage. This weather was the remnants of TS Sean. This was in November 2011. An attempt was made to motor to the bahamas but during a fuel drop from a freighter something happened to cause her to be dead in the water (I believe it had something to do with lines getting wrapped in prop not sure). The owner and crew abandoned her as he saw no other choice (november 26, 2011 N30-10.246 W070-53.633) I had loaned him my life raft for the trip. Glad he had it but didn't need it. The owner is a great guy and I know it was a huge dream of his. Sad it ended that way. Hopefully he is out there living his dream even if its not sailing. Great boat I know he put a lot of work into her.
