Re: Liana's Ransom Abandoned at Sea

Well, he said it all in the first couple of paragraphs. They left on a Friday.

They'd been warned....

Re: Liana's Ransom Abandoned at Sea

It looks like their main gaff throat jammed and they couldn't get the sail back down. No vangs to keep it under control? Bad situation! I don't think I'd climb that particular rig under those conditions, and I wouldn't want to be beneath that thing flogging away either! The main boom seems to be bent and adrift as well.

Neither sail appears to be reefed. Also looks like their small boat fell off its bow davit. That might be why they had to jump to safety instead.

Re: Liana's Ransom Abandoned at Sea

Very interesting story. They were sailing with spit and chewing gum. I think they had already used up the bailing wire and rescue tape.

Do those waves look 10 to 15 feet as the narrator in the story says?

Re: Liana's Ransom Abandoned at Sea

I'm watching this boat right now as it's towed into Gloucester. It's definitely floating, that's for sure. The bowsprit is busted and hanging, no dinghy on the transom hangers, but the life raft is still there. The main sail looks fine, though it's lowered (but rigged). And the bulwarks are busted up on the starboard side. But it otherwise looks intact.

Someone's going to collect a good salvage fee on this one.

Re: Liana's Ransom Abandoned at Sea

Here's a picture. I'm probably 1/2 mile away, so it's cropped heavily and quality has suffered, but it's better than nothing

Good thing they were puking to the "lease" side. Would hate to see what would happen if they puked to the "buy" side. (And the Morg, etc...)

And whiskey tango foxtrot with all the ALL CAP links that link to the same story? Somebody can't figure out the blog software?

You mean you got through the entire article?

Unbelievable- no indication of any kind of seamanship ability what so ever.

A 20 minute window on the tide- that doesn't even make sense.

Please somebody tell me there is nobody daft enough to sail off shore from Dartmouth to the caribean in March with only a cell phone for a compas? My little "Van" has 4 good quality magnetic compasses one at the Binnacle, one in the salon and one in each of the cabins. Plus the orienteering compas in my ditch bag.

This guy claims they departed with only one of their two engines in running condition. Kind of defeats the purpose of redundancy, not to mention a single screw boat is designed to track and operate efficiently on one engine- but a twin screw needs both engines to work the way it was meant to.

Navy Navigator or something? No no no. Either you're a navigator n the Navy or you're not, there is no grey area.

If there is any justice in the world these jokers insurance company will tell them to go take a pee off the windward rail.

wow. that's every bit as bad, and even more so, than I thought. FamVan - I take back any defense I may have ever said about these guys in this situation. you're right - throw the book at em. I hope none of em ever go to sea in any position of responsibility again!

Unbelievably (and embarrassingly) he is a graduate of a local university ranked as the top undergraduate college in Canada a bazillion years in a row. In my day, with those grammar and vocabulary skills, he wouldn't have graduated high school.

I know this has been discussed ad infintum in multiple threads, but I find it hard to believe the taxes of the rest pay for the idiocy of morons like these. Neither the boat in its condition nor the crew were capable of being out there. And the crew, after their second rescue this year, still haven't figured that out.

Re: Liana's Ransom Abandoned at Sea

Based on that logic rescues would Hardley happen and you would still spend the same amount off money and then they would not have the skills when I might need rescuing so I'm all for them saving idiots.

I agree, it's part of the package when you live in a developed nation. When I was about 16 I was rescued in rough weather in Lake Ontario. Was I foolish to be out there? Absolutely. Would a fee have made me not foolish? No, I was 16.

I spent 9 of my years in the Canadian Coast Guard as a Rescue Specialist. I have been involved in a lot of rescues, some were the result of stupidity, some the result of hubris, but a great many were the result of bad luck or tragedy. I do not agree with charging for SAR. Even though these guys appear to have not been affected by bad luck or tragedy.
