We just shot tails off of Dragonflies...Great fun!...sort of like a helicopter loosing its tail roter.....we left the butterflies alone.

But you didn't want to be a bird or a squirrel in my neighborhood either..

I suspect that some guys aren't open minded about finding a fellow sitting on his girlfriends' lap when he comes back from the can.

It's stupid 'pick on the different kid' junior high school nonsense. It seems that some folks never grow out of it.

Not only don't they grow out of it but the internet has brought out the wost in some people. Would many have a go at this person if Reid was face to face with them?

How bad is cyber bulling getting?

POLICE have arrested a man who allegedly plastered child pornography over Facebook sites set up to pay tribute to a dead schoolboy and schoolgirl.

Elliot Fletcher, 12, died after a Brisbane schoolyard stabbing in February.

Trinity Bates, 8, was murdered in Bundaberg in the same month.

To say that case is shocking is an understatement. But if people will deface an 8 and 12 years olds memorial page what hurt would they think is OK to a person so far at sea and in the public eye they can't defend themselves?

It's the anonymous factor. Same as road rage. People will say and do all sorts of things from inside a car that they would never do face to face. The internet has just become an extension of that behavior.

It is a proven fact that children mimic their parents actions. This is the learning process.

What kind of message is being taught to the children of those that think it is ok to just say or do anything from the safety of the desktop, or inside the car (road rage).

The adults may think that it is quite funny as the "satirical humor" rolls on. But do the children understand the difference between satire and meanness?

As for me, I was fortunate and was taught that it was wrong to expound negatively on a persons differences or failings for personal entertainment, instead I was taught to embrace peoples differences and to be tolerant of different views, for this is key to understanding and enjoying the richness and diversity of life among our species.

However, I was also taught to stand up against those that chose to take advantage of or otherwise demean a person simply because they were different or disadvantaged in some way, especially if the target of the attack was unable to defend themselves either by physical disability or lack of physical presence.

I have to wonder what lessons were taught by the parents to the children involved in the bullying deaths of some school children here in the states.

As for Reid, he is an adult and can stand up for himself, as can I. I worry very little about a negative comment thrown my way as I usually consider the source.

But the rabid foaming at the mouth that is on the SA site I find very little humor in it. And I hope it does not come over here and infect this site.

Well said. Perhaps in that spirit you might be willing to say that you might have "misspoken" when you referred to those with differing opinions that they are "losers"?

Hello John,

You will notice that I prefaced the comment with "most that I have met", which is a sad statement in and of itself, that certainly means that not all that are against the voyage are losers, only most that I have met. Just as it does not mean that all that support the voyage are winners, only most that I have met.

Some of my friends are negative about the 1000 day voyage, and they are still winners in life and business, some of my friends are supportive of the endeauvour but they tend to be a bit more open minded than most and not all of them are successful in life or business either.

Perhaps I am turning out to be like my very scary and crotchety grandfather who had little tolerance for anyone who wasted their time berating or making satirical videos (ok, there were no videos in his time, but you catch my drift) someone for pursuing a goal or dream, instead of being supportive of someones dreams or goals, or minding thier own business if it did not endanger lives or affect them directly in some other way.

When I see the amount of time effort and energy that has been put into the negativity towards a goal that has no impact on anyone except Reid and the other members of the voyage, on the SA site, it makes me wonder what possible positive benefit can come out of it, except a few laughs at someone elses expense.

So for the record not all that have differing opinions are losers.

I have heard it said that we all turn out to be like our fathers or grand fathers (mothers/ grand mothers) eventually. I just wished I had payed more attention to that axiom of life before I got married.

edit note; oops forgot to add that my ex-wife has also expressed this regret. (on numerous occasions)

I think pretty much everything has been said and written about this trip , I just wonder if he would do the same thing without satellite internet or if he would go insane without being able to tweet his musings and read well wishing emails.
Regardless of all the relative merits of what he his doing , I think turning the whole thing into a commercially sponsored venture focused on long ( and very slow) exposure of the adventure takes something away from his avowed spirituality but I don't have a problem understanding and have a good measure of respect for the guy . But I have laughed very hard at descriptions of him as a "shipping hazzard" , comments on the space cadetness and some tactical and weather advice regarding his progress. Great comedy material , girl's morning sickness and all . I guess way too many people like myself just cannot relate in the least to his concept of a Sea Voyage , but apparently his sponsors are happy , his fans are many and he's doing his thing ,so more power to him .

It is pretty clear that we are not discussing the journey of Reid Stowe or how to stay on a boat for 1000 days without re-provisioning, but rather "Reid Stowe" the person.

As this is a cruising forum about cruising and sailing, Analyzing Reid Stowe's motivations, personal history and personality have no place here.

We'll shut it down right here for now.
