What Are the Details of this Horrible Sailboat Accident?

A guess:

The sailboat appeared on course to pass to the port side of the ferry (ie steer to starboard) per the Colregs. Steering cable broke at a bad time and prop-walk pushed her into a hard port turn just as the ferry approached.
