Just wait until someone buys this young lady a boat and sponsors her circumnavigation. (Yes, yes I know, thread drift and too much time on my hand )
Its a shame that she doesn't have an anchor shackled to her ankle. While sitting on a goat. But I've seen that expression of hers before...she's clearly trying to decide between buying a multi or a mono...

I'm not married because I was horribly disfigured when I was in the war.

I don't hate anyone. It's just that I love Truth so much, that in comparison, it may appear as hate, when in reality, it is nothing more than pity.

(Do not let this lead you to believe that I possess truth consistently. Such a thing is, and always will be, a life long struggle.)

Okay, that's enough with the off-course drift, guys. Let's get this thread back on track. The OP's premise was that Jessica Watson had proven herself lacking in basic seamanship skills on her delivery down the Australian coast to begin her 'round-the-world record attempt . . . that she had, to put it bluntly, FAILED her first test.

Any posts to this thread that do not address this premise will be deleted without comment.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Sorry TaoJones, we have been a bit of a motley crew on this thread.

She did make her 5 day trip without incident and so definitely proved there is more to her than the average kid her age.

I was also pondering if the comments we hear from her are cropped by the media to appear more child like? Maybe she talks about weather helm and sail trim but it doesn't make it all the way over in the US. Her blog doesn't reflect a serious sailor. It doesn't seem that too many average everyday Aussies think this is a bad idea, maybe that isn't making it all the way over to the US too.

Wishing she wouldn't take that route, but either way, Godspeed Jessica,

Erika

I've been reading the Oz papers, mainly, that's the news reports I've been referencing.

Agreed her blog is childish.

Right. She painted it pink after buying it, but before getting the big sponsor. Though I suppose its possible that she painted it pink in hopes of attracting that sponsor.

Neither she, nor her parents, bought the boat, which was donated (by Don McIntyre) to her use.

you know, after all this conversation and looking at her route, I have to agree that she is not up to it. I think the Southern Ocean will win before 3 weeks....
I will still hope she makes it back safely, but I just don't think her chances are good.

I stand corrected. Forgot about that.

Just curious, how much is that boat worth if she turned around and sold it right now?

Hard to say. Apparently, it originally cost $150,000 (presumably Au $) plus equipment, and has undergone about $50,000 in repairs (also provided free).

Don McIntyre, of Blackmans Bay, says he won't strip the 16-year-old Queenslander of the yacht, Ella's Pink Lady, which he provided for her circumnavigation attempt, despite doubts about her ability to survive the journey...”

... He and his wife Margie bought the $150,000 yacht to lend to Jessica and provided other equipment to allow the journey to go ahead...”
