A compilation of real life mistakes made by sailors

I asked about real life mistakes made by sailors and put them into a blog you can find here.

https://www.cygnus3.com/sailing-mist...t-compilation/

Enjoy

Re: A compilation of real life mistakes made by sailors

We moved to the Pacific Northwest and bought a Beneteau 321. A whole new adventure after sailing smaller boats on inland lakes on the prairies.
Who knew that a Beneteau 321 was so much more difficult to maneuver than a small sailboat? We proudly sailed our boat over from Vancouver and went to dock her in our slip in Sidney on Vancouver Island.
After overshooting our slip I madly put the boat in reverse, banged into some boats, slammed it back into forward and plowed into some other boats while my wife ran around with a fender trying to avert disaster.
We spent the next half hour playing bumper boats with the rest of the boats in the marina. The happy hour crowd at the bar lined the rails to watch the fun.
Next day we hired an experienced skipper to give us some docking lessons ....

Can understand your frustration in Sydney. It's pretty tight in there especially w/a 40'. Plus the winds blow crosswise in there. I went in there once and that was enough.

The thing with larger boats is you have to work with the wind and tides. So pre thinking the operation is a must, especially in a new slip. Just go as slow as you can without the wind taking over.
With a fin keel too the bow will blow away in a cross wind, spinning the boat away from its intended course. Calculating for wind direction is tricky. Going in a slip direct into the wind is easiest, if you have enough turning space.

When maneuvering a boat under power... neutral is your best friend... put it in forward untill your moving and switch back into neutral.. you will keep moving forward but slowly... hit reverse for a second and you will stop. it's like having breaks on a boat.
