Re: I bought a stolen dinghy

I asked because of your extraordinary knowledge of all laws in all states. You sure know a lot and state it as fact so I KNOW it's all true.

Re: I bought a stolen dinghy

Hooray! Got my dinghy back today. Was a mix up all along. MY dinghy was never stolen. An A was changed to a B in the HIN, and that dinghy was stolen. Was even able to register it

Re: I bought a stolen dinghy

The T/T issue caught my attention. We were stopped for "creating a wake" while "speeding" at about 3-5mph in our RIB in Ft Lauderdale a couple of years back. Incidentally we were not really the culprit. That was the boat that passed us at twice our speed going in the opposite direction and caused a wave that nearly swamped our boat!! But that is besides the point -- we got the ticket regardless, and were threatened with worse treatment for protesting the point. But in the course of the "discussion" these FLP finest decided that we should not have had our RIB registered (in RI) because it was a tender to our larger vessel (where our RIB docs were located at that time). They said in FL the RIB should not be registered separately. On the other hand, before traveling through Florida, I read several stories about water cops being decidedly nasty to unregistered dinghies. Go figure!!!!!

That is just incorrect, period. What law enforcement division were they from? Part of the problem in Florida is that you have numerous law enforcement departments that have managed to finagle themselves a big boat and motors so they get a chance to roar up and down the ICW doing something a lot more fun than writing traffic tickets, and they have to justify their existence by doing something, so they search for infractions. I have said in other threads how I once was circled by five different law enforcement departments while waiting for an opening bridge--they were all cruising looking for that ticket to show that they had been doing their job. Unfortunately, some of them are not all that familiar with the letter of boating law.

Re: I bought a stolen dinghy

I do not doubt that you are correct. Regardless the dinghy (and the motor ) needed to be registered in Rhode Island, so it was not even a consideration for us. These were Ft. Lauderdale water cops who were probably also trying to get some tickets booked at week's end!! talk about arrogant A-holes!!

I will say this. I thought I had residency figured out. And, I now have a $10,000 income tax bill for 2010 for a state I didn't set foot in, in 2010.
