At instructor meetings at a prominent sailing school, I always wanted to set up a few chairs with a sign, “NO ******** ZONE” near by. Holier than thou always seemed to be the prevailing attitude.

Well then call me a liar. I haven't made one or two mistakes... more like one or two hundred!

This might be an opportunity for sailors to consider buying "commuter cups" for their beverages.

Re: I Did A Very Stupid Thing

I was out single-handing yesterday. Was futzing around trying to lower the dagger-boards on my little cat, which had me standing bent over next to the lifelines, using two hands for the job - no extra hand for the boat. I thought, "Hmmm... I could easily get tumbled right over the life-lines into the water. Wouldn't that be fun!" I got down on one knee and wedged myself firmly in place before finishing the task.

Re: I Did A Very Stupid Thing

I once had a two seater 17.5' Folbot Super w/ Sailrig. Every time I took it out by myself, it capsized. But when I took another along, it wouldn't. People assumed I was an idiot who couldn't handle sails.

Finally, years later, I realized that the sail plan was designed for the larger ballast of the two-seater fully loaded.

Re: I Did A Very Stupid Thing

Having read this thread, commiserated with the OP and paused to think of todays sail and various moments I might have positioned better etc (it was honkin today)
had to post this. As a solo sailor Ive been making up all sorts of variations on "when it is ________I will put on my harness and click in" etc but havent been doing it. Im 67 and in pretty good shape but reading all this I reflect it is just not that hard to wear the harness and click in when going up forward to reef or tweak a halyard etc...
guess its time and that means tomorrow!

Re: I Did A Very Stupid Thing

It's a wonder any of us live to tell the tale. By all accounts we should have killed ourselves as children. When I was 4-5 years old I thought I could fly like Superman if I tied a towel like a cape around my neck. I jumped off the front porch roof. Landed so hard my knees hit my jaw and nearly broke my neck. Now my boat demands a blood or piece of flesh sacrifice once in a while. Last time I was putting the 3 step ladder for the galley back in position on the pins and used my index finger to feel the alignment on the pin. Of coarse it cut the tip of my finger off like a cigar clipper. I'll be 70 in a few more months.
Hoping I can make it and not kill my self.

Very very good idea

For decades of my sailing life, since I got old enough for my father to stop making me (about 6 I think), I used to never wear a life jacket except in survival conditions, but I'm starting to wear one more often, and lately always when I'm single handed.

What really helps a lot is to have a really comfortable life jacket. I gave myself a present this spring of a new Spinlock one, which is the bomb. Hardly notice it's there, and it has a handy pouch for keeping all kinds of stuff you like to have handy, and a place to hang your knife. It's a surprisingly powerful incentive to put it on.

So did the cup survive? You can replace a coffee cup but you can never replace YOUR coffee cup.

I like my DeLonghi superautomatic espresso machine. Power hog but you only run it briefly. Life without cappuccino? Not for me. I have a quad shot cappa every morning and seldom drink any caffeine any other time.

Ha, ha.

Well, I use a poor man's variant -- a Nespresso.

And MY COFFEE CUP? I have a variety of them on board, including some nice china ones, but oddly I prefer the very light plastic ones which came with an electric kettle.

So yes, survived. And my body is more or less recovered. And I did the same trip again today, Tallinn-Helsinki, single handed, on yet another gorgeous F4 on yet another gorgeous sunny day.
