Re: Oops. Time for some trig.

Thanks all, happily afloat and moved to somewhere a bit deeper now. Took two tries, the first effort left me swinging two feet from a channel marker.

I’ll sort out the mess later today. Time to catch up on missed sleep. Don’t sleep too well at 45 degrees.

Oh well.... sea cock sorted .... so you didn't run aground you careened her.....

And at least its coming up to springs and you weren't 'neaped'.

Caught a couple of lucky breaks there. Ran aground on the smaller tide range for a start. (Don’t know the name of that phase).

As for careening... it was always an option for this boat, however I think I’ll have to replace the 40 year old porthole seals first.

Re: Oops. Time for some trig.

Glad you floated off. I've always been a little worried that the mud would keep sucking you down....

One time looking for hatch sealing material, we found a place that sealing was the whole business, they had a huge variety of solid and open gasket materials. Maybe you can source enough to do all your ports at once, and that will be one important problem solved.

Is this event going to affect your departure date?

Re: Oops. Time for some trig.

If the ports are leaking at the frame/hull interface only one way to go .. butyl mastic

Mainesail has some info on his site..

Some years ago when I did mine the original was a white substance... which was quite brittle...

When did you ever see a car windscreen leaking?

Tides? I would call it higher high water and lower high water.... may not be correct but that is what I would call it.

Happyness is floating free.

My on-board photographer has a Samsung phone and I am pretty impressed by how well it works in the dark. These pictures were taken at close to midnight.

Been there done that, in your boat Manura, went over in Great Sandy Straight caught in the mud, back in 86 think. Anyway not a problem except for some wet books when the Ports entered the water.

Re: Oops. Time for some trig.

I am glad it worked out for you. I have been caught a few times where I didn't find out until too late that the indicated depth was shallower by a good bit that that indicated on the charts. Yes, the depth finder was not working at that time. Oops. It is always a great feeling when the waters are rising and you know the worst is over. Good luck with everything.

Re: Oops. Time for some trig.

GILow great photos. I’ve not been quite there but have definitely and deliberately tried to go to sleep while aground. More than once. Not that I ever run aground. Ever. Except while afloat. Sort of.
I’ve been holding my breath for you. And thanks for your courage in putting it all out there for your supporters to see.
Stupid question. Do the ports leak in sideways rain or is this a newly discovered failure mode?

What a great idea. For careening, of course.

What!? Graham didn’t tell me they leaked back then, he’d told me there’d be no problem. I assumed they leaked because the seals were 40 years old. Grrrr... he’s in trouble when I see him.

And... er... it’s ManEra. ManUra makes her sound like a pile of cow poo.

Thank you for the words of support. And you’ve done well to have avoided it so far.

As for sleeping at that angle, we ended up “sitting” on the aft cabin side, with our heads rested on the mattress.

Not exactly text-book, but strangely comfortable.

The ports have never leaked in rain or even infrequent submersion in big waves. It was just the constant submerging that cause one to trickle about a litre a minute.

Seems from Oceanside’s previous experience that they’ve always done so, they were practically new in 1986.

I don’t even have the excuse of a lack of depth sounder or bad charts. It was just poor seamanship in my case.
