Re: Oops. Time for some trig.

The trig is the easy bit. Pivot point, edge or centre of the keel, contact point at the turn of the bilge etc, as is often the case the devil is in the detail.

The really worrisome one is down flooding angle after the tide turns. I learned after the first time to make damned sure the boat is leaning away from the most likely direction the waves will come from.

Re: Oops. Time for some trig.

The assumption here is that a boat aground will flop over sideways.....but that is not always the case, as I can readily attest.
I have hit an underwater sand bar dead on from the front, so much so that the bow raised a foot or two to skyward and the keel was so deeply pegged, that the boat could stand upright, without lateral support, and trying to get the boat to lean over one way or another takes some doing.
Tying to get off again, could not be done going backwards or sideways, it required not only a tide change, but also going underwater to dig away the sand bar to provide a furrow to pull the boat thru' the sand bar to the other side of the bar.

Fun indeed

Re: Oops. Time for some trig.

yes, moving downwind at a merry clip...the B'mas....the sand bar snuck up to me out of nowhere.....bad light, overcast.....never saw it coming...just rode right up on it....there was some alcohol involved in that day's sail....could have been a factor.....had to set the anchor out, dig a furrow and winch the boat thru' the bar...for a while thought I might become a permanent monument to sailing follies....but escaped to tell the tale...the good Lord looks after drunks, fools and sailors......so was well covered that day
