Re: We Thought We Were Sinking . . .

I have a Toyota Prius, and a lady next to me at the gas station asked why I was there, wasn't it a Hybrid? And these people are allowed to vote.....

Re: We Thought We Were Sinking . . .

While sitting on an island sipping a rum & coke watching the sunset on a clear evening, my wife says to me "This could be a stupid question but.....how does the sun stay up in the sky like that?"

I almost choked on my drink. Here's a woman in her 50's, with a university degree....after I told her it was an optical illusion and it was actually sitting on the water, I had to go through astronomy 101 with her.

Re: We Thought We Were Sinking . . .

Oh...I forgot a good one from my wife, a few years back....

After she graduated college, we married and moved to central California (cow country). While driving along admiring the bovines (and the smell), she mentioned her surprise that cows pee milk.

True story.

Re: We Thought We Were Sinking . . .

funny! We had a similar one on Shanaly - why did the bilge keep filling during a storm while in pen?! turned out water was rain from mizzen, down into lazarette like a drainpipe, into next bilge compartment over bulkhead, ditto, and into main sump!

Re: We Thought We Were Sinking . . .

ps my favourite storys from an old gent who was cruising on top deck of a large cruise ship. he hopped out of bed to go to the bathroom and was ankle deep in water. he thought it was a few minutes to a Titanic conclusion...but he had left the bath taps running!!!

[on a serious note the best fact i ever heard is that once the pressure equalises both sides of the hole in the hull, the boat stops sinking. to put it another way, once the waterline inside matches the 'new' waterline outside, you can sail on while bailing...tho probably a bit sluggishly. the water rushes in fastest at first, then ever slower. this explains why SO MANY sailors abandon a 'sinking' ship, only to re-encounter her hours or weeks later, and reboard!!! obviously the higher the hole, the less dramatic the change - simple but important. ]

The vast majority of boats sink if holed. Few have the reserve buoyancy to remain floating. GRP is heavy.
