We Thought We Were Sinking . . .

On our very first night aboard our very first cruiser:
We were playing with the electronics, AC, etc, getting the feel of things. Before going to sleep, we couldn't figure out WHY there was so much water being pumped out of the hull! Paranoid and convinced that we were sinking, we stayed up all night. We read manuals, previous surveys on the boat, we tore the floor up, did extensive mathematical calculations.... only to realize at dawn, bleary-eyed and exhausted, that we left the water pump for the AC running.

It's all in the small details.

I bet you slept good after that. I call it boat bonding. You have to learn all the ins and outs of your vessel and they can be complicated. Next time there is a problem (and there will be). You will know right where to go in the manual or where to look on the boat. Call it an all nighter study lesson.

Re: We thought we were sinking...

Good one...

You now KNOW which thru hull the ac water uses, do you now know which one the bilge pump uses??

Learn where every thru hull is located and for what purpose, NOW... each and every one can sink your boat in a heart beat...

Ranks with trying to find the engine under the front hood of a 1966 VW Beetle, much less a radiator.

We have been there.

Re: We Thought We Were Sinking . . .

My first year living aboard a past boat saw me up all night trying to figure out the hissing sound and clicking coming from my hull. I thought it was some weird electrolysis from my electrical system. Turned out to be a yearly migration of a tiny shrimp...Boy!...did I feel stupid!

Re: We Thought We Were Sinking . . .

On a very quiet night at anchor I started hearing a constant clicking sound, 2 or 3 clicks a second.

Stupid depth sounder...

Re: We Thought We Were Sinking . . .

My first night stay on my last boat I stuck my arm out of bed and let it hang down, only to find water on the floor. Was only a couple of cups worth from a dripping strainer cover, but it got me up out of bed fast!
