Re: 35 foot wooden cruiser - needs an anchor - Sydney

I have one I think. Like new, never used, fresh painted, CQR type spade with a long shank maybe 45#? I don't know value maybe $150. range? I will weigh and post photo in a day or so. It is in Anacortes just across from u. I could be talked into delivering it or meeting you at the BC ferry dock. Let me know after weight and photo posted. Sunseeker

Re: 35 foot wooden cruiser - needs an anchor - Sydney

OK I was wrong on all counts. Cast on the shank is "Danforth Deep Set P 1800." On Google it can be seen on Cruising World Jan-April 1989 pg. 37 or Boating Feb.-June 1989 pg. 13. Look for Deep Set Plow Anchors. I called Danforth Rep. and he said the 33 Lb. which this one weights, sold for $290. in 1984. Should be good for a 40'-50' boat. It shows no use, no chips or dings. The paint is flaking so I will clean off and repaint. Price $150. The Anchor is in Anacortes we can work out a mutual meeting place if you are interested. Sid

AFLOAT

It is issued monthly, and has wealth of detail on Sydney marine suppliers and private ads, including marine engines new and used, marine articles on cruising, restorations, maritime history and marine happenings in Sydney Harbour, and beyond.

............I recommend Balmain Marina. phone 0438 002 918..for DIY weekend slipping, just a stone's through away from your mooring....and may well be able to provide a tow for that short distance.

Good luck with this project.
Or he could just download it from the website anytime he wants it, even back issues

Gotta wonder why anyone would paint a "like new, never used" galvanized anchor.

I agree with the comment on AFLOAT, its very useful and with lots of good sources. My local the Sydney Rowers Club in Abbotsford provide the latest issue whenever released. I have a funny anecdote about the Balmain marina. I called the owner and mentioned I had bought a 10 y.o. cruiser and did he have any marina space to which he responded "yes but first I'll book you into our Therapy Room". Very funny.

If you are new to boating can I suggest you buy a copy of "Australian Boating Manual" by Capt. Dick Gandy which is an encyclopaedia of boating. For example it will tell you which anchor is preferable for your intended use(s) and recommend a size based on boat length.

Bon chance,

Alex
Hi Alex,
love the therapy room note -) yep this is going to be a massive project, I actually love working with wood and building/restoring I find it very therapeutic itself (ask me in 12 months time) My job is a technical one and its hard to turn off - boat work is the best distraction, i just love it. I will dig deeper into afloat, I've read it a few times but not noticed the ads and classifieds, (I have a copy and will take it on a fishing trip to Middle Harbour in the morning)

thanks for your thoughts

Cheers.
Hi Rob, thanks for the warm welcome, I'll have a read of the anchor threads but sounds like what you have would be suitable, i'll PM you to talks some details :-) i'm out at middle Harbour tomorrow any chance that is near you - if we can work something out.

If you have any experience in mechanics fitting engines is not that difficult and means you could fit a new engine for the price of a used one plus instalation.
Hi Roland, sounds like the 33pbs of Robs anchor would do the trick and i take it i could add a 10 lbs "Kellet" if wind or seas were rough. didnt even know about stern anchors??

I have had some experience with engines but the scale of the commodore in her now has me worried (must be at least 1 ton) and i'm not even sure how i will get it out and a new beast in - without cutting a huge hole in the roof of the cabin :-(

new engines look like 10k+ is that what it would cost to fit one??? i hope not.

Looks like you have a fair bit of windage there. I'd use a 25Lb for picnic anchoring, & a 45Lb CQR if you can get one for places like Port Stephens for overnight. We used a 45Lb Danforth with 7/16" chain for overnight anchorage in outer Great Barrier Reef lagoons for a 40Ft trawler type launch. In my experience lots of chain is as important as what is on the end of it in many situations.
wow that was a long time ago ;-) yes after reading i see Chain and rope length is just as important, I'll see what's already aboard (i do know its a bit rusty does that matter?
