Bahamas During Hurricane Season?

Does anyone cruise the Bahamas during hurricane season? Is there anywhere to shelter if a big one blows in?

Yes. I know folks that cruise here all year round. There are hurricane holes but you have to understand that nothing is hurricane proof. Insurance might be a problem.

Hole 3 is for storage only. No living aboard. Right now it is full.

There are a few good hidey holes in the Exumas. A shallow draft and lots of good ground tackle might help.

Is it a ghost-town over there in the summer? I would hate to bore my kids.

Re: Bahamas during hurrican season?

Plenty of folks live in the Bahamas year round and go out in boats on a very regular basis. Lots of fishing, diving, and tourist related activities require the boats to be on the water. When a hurricane hits there are places those boats are stored. Also lots of cruisers who are in the Bahamas year round. If you pick up a cruising guide you can find blurbs about where boats can be anchored if a storm hits. Being in the area you may also be able to talk to the locals and get additional information.

As others have said insurance may be a problem. But the biggest hits insurance companies take are when a storm like Sandy hits a place like the Northeast where no one is expecting or prepared for a hurricane.

Not saying it is a good idea to go cruising in areas where hurricanes may hit, just that lots of folks with boats live in those areas year round.

Compared with winter it is like a ghost town. No kids boats.

Re: Bahamas during hurrican season?

I think you will find that most insurance companies will require your boat to be either out of the water or north of Florida from June 1 to November 1 during the "hurricane season". Not to say you can not do it but it will certainly be expensive plus with so much to learn why would you even consider the risk of encountering a hurricane at anchor anywhere??

Figured I might as well enjoy the summer with my kids in the Bahamas since I have to pass by Florida anyhow to bring the boat to Boston. Nice pit stop. Kids should enjoy the place.

No so, we were a kid boat every summer for years. Not as many as during the season but we always found other kid boats. Lots of Florida family's head to the Bahamas as soon as school lets out. The weather is excellent until about mid July when the tropical waves become more numerous. As for insurance, as we live in Florida our insurance does not just stop on June 1st! A typical policy in this area will put the top of the box on the Tropic of Cancer which is just south of George Town.
