ENGINE RUST FIX

Hi brand new to this forum and need some help. Purchasing a 1995 Saberline 36' boat with 3116's. The outboard sides of both engines have had a considerable amount of rust. It has been removed and treated. How concerned should i be?

Also has a lot of stress cracks and has only been moderately takin care of. The price is right. How concerned should I be? Having it surveyed next week.

Thanks for taking some time.

ENGINE RUST FIX

Depends on how bad the rust was, and why it rusted to begin with, and what does treated mean.
Not trying to be mean, but if it rusted because they are regularly sprayed with salt water due to the air ingress into the hull and that has not been fixed, it will reoccur. And if threaded means sprayed with rustoleum, it will reoccur.
Finally gelcoat cracking can be common and not indicative of much, or it can be cracked cause there is a problem with the underlining glass, you need a good surveyor, they should be able to tell you to walk or not.
Don't be upset if the surveyor tells you to walk, if so likely you have found a good one, and they may have saved you a lot of grief and money.

If by "survey" you mean a mechanical survey performed by a CAT specialist... wait to hear what he/she says.

If by "survey" you mean only a normal marine survey -- mostly hull and other systems, cursory info about engines -- then you also would benefit from a mechanical survey. Your local CAT dealer could likely advise...
