Question Fuel Consumption: 150 hp Cummins

Can anyone advise about the rate of fuel consumed by a pair of 150 hp Cummins diesels? The boat is a 40' Kha Shing -- perhaps going 8 knots? Any advice would be great.

150 hp fuel consumption answer (wow!)

Thank very much for such excellent - and fast - information. The motors we MAY purchase on the boat are not turbos. One "blew up" on a previous perspective buyer's sea trial and one is 'original' so we're a bit leary of it.

Would the rate of fuel burn be different on a naturally aspirated engine?

Amazing, how quickly you had such excellent data!

Much thanks. This is our first post. Who could tell?

I would guess that a naturally aspirated engine would spin slower, so would use less fuel.

It would also have less things to go wrong

I simply googled the thread title Fuel Consumption: 150 hp Cummins and it was 4th on the list
Fuel Consumption: 150 hp Cummins - Google Search

No, a turbo motor is more economical than a normally aspirated engine as it will normally be smaller and lighter for a given horse power, having said that a diesel motor will give out the same amount of energy per litre of fuel weather it is turbo or not

I hope you can under stand what I am trying to say

Jim:

I have two ways of approaching this question:

1. This summer I helped a CHB 45 owner move his boat which had twin 135 hp Perkins. We used about 4-5 gph and cruised at about 8 kts. This is a bigger and heavier boat than yours.

2. Another way is that a 30,000 lb boat (my guess) will need about 50 hp to make hull speed. Your hull speed is about 8 kts. 50 hp will require about .06*50= 3 gph. Twin engines will burn a little more.

So 3-4 gph is my guess.

Also check your engine rpm at that speed and take the fuel consumption from the Cummins PROP curve.
