And a bypass filter can add years to your engine. I've used most of the bypass products out there, going back to the toilet paper filter. I think the Gulf Coast filter would be better than the SpinnerII.
Can you disclose the make and model of your centrifuge?

Re: How often do you change oil.

855 Cummins
Two methods of calculating oil change
Every 250 hours says the book and oil is still clean (bypass filter standard)
If doing it by fuel burnt method it'd be more like 600 hours

As we do it at 250 hours the genset then gets the old oil from the 855 fed through it every 75 to 100 hours

3gm30f yanmar. Every 100 hours per the manufacturer spec. I pull a sample each time as well.

The oil looks great. Engine is 40 year old Perkins 4-236.

Do I change it just because it’s been a year?

How many hours do you go on an oil change?
I’m sure there are lots of “what if’s and it all depends on ” concerning this question.
Just looking for generic answers.
Thanks
Regardless of the hours, I change at the end of the season, so the engine has clean oil when it's just sitting there.
If we were doing a lot of motoring, and it came up to 100 hours well before the end of the season, I would change then also.

Re: How often do you change oil.

yanmar 2 x 4JH2-HTE

services every 150hrs - oil / filters. for us this equates to 2-3 times pa depending how far we've travelled and how kind the winds have been.

every second service (300hrs) do the impeller.

cheers,

I use a US Filtermaxx. You can see the model here:
https://usfiltermaxx.com/en/6-wvo-wa...ae-centrifuges
And it's on ebay here:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/US-Filterma...UAAMXQMMNR5-2c
I used very high speed centrifuges on ships and tugs and this was the closest I could find that was within the budget. I bought mine 10 years ago for about $1400. I don't run it continuously, I do the oil after I shutdown the engines, somewhere around 50 hours. The pans are plumbed to a pump, then to a hydraulic tank that heats to 180°F. Hot oil cleans the soot and water out better. That tank is pressurized and feeds the centrifuge. The flow rate and centrifuge rpm determine how clean the oil becomes. At max rpm and low flow rate the oil looks like new. It takes me less than 30 minutes to do 2 Detroits and maybe a generator. If you'd like more details, ask.

Re: How often do you change oil.

Yanmar 3YM - annually, which can vary from 250-80 hours.
None for the past 18 months - as the boat has been on the hard since I left Greece in October 2019.

I have had yanmar and Volvo engines, and on each type I stuck to a routine of changing oil every 300 hours. (The engines we’re pretty much in constant use with no winter layups)

Re: How often do you change oil.

For Pelagia,

Ref my post #14 and your question thinking it should be at 150hrs, I just checked the Yanmar manual for my 4JH3-TE. At Section 5 (p87) it confirms every 250 hrs or 1 yr. Gearbox every 1,000hrs or 4 yrs.

Yes I know. I downloaded manual for your engine and saw it indicated 250 hrs. So I edited my original post (which was up <10 min) to simply state what I do (every 150 hrs), which is what the manual indicates for my Yanmar 4JH-TE

Re: How often do you change oil.

Universal M-35 engine running about 100 hours per year. I change the oil and filter every 75-100 hours and again just before (summer) storage here in Florida. I use the best oil filter I can get, usually it's a K&N and use Molly in the oil.

Re: How often do you change oil.

Bypass filters every two hundred hours, oil every thousand hours or once a year. Religiously. This is serious cruising. We are suprised howw quickly these hours come.
