Hull Topside Paint Color / Not White

About to paint my hull and repair hurricane damage
I cruise and charter and run the generators a good bit so I get smoke stains etc and have to do a lot of wash downs on the hook
Looking for suggestions for hull colors that are ez to maintain and keep clean
I have one boat that has a flag blue hull , a nightmare to keep clean living on a mooring, With a water maker

Considering a Awgcraft 2000 metallic tan or silver , or Awlcraft Tan / Beige
It is a big 77 ft boat
Also any comments / experience on the upkeep of metlitic paint would be appreciated
Any suggestions or comments ?

Re: Hull Topside Paint Color / Not White

Just a couple of thoughts...
I assume you are spraying?
Metallic paint on boats leaves me cold. They can be difficult to repair and patch and they are more difficult to get on evenly in the first place. Can you say high maintenance?
I understand the desire to avoid a vivid, dark color. They can look great if one has the time to keep them up but they too are more work.
If white is out then I’d suggest a light non metallic color. Some greys are good looking, light green is nice (that is what we did on our most recent boat) and there are a bunch of off white colors that can look good.
Without knowing the boat or the other colors involved like canvas, decks, superstructure etc, it is difficult to make a suggestion. One mistake people make is ignoring “the rest of the boat” when choosing a hull color. Ever seen a beige deck color combined with grey top Sides? It looks awful...

Bruce

Good thoughts

I have pretty much dismissed the Metlic paints, to much work and $$$ this really is a working M/Y in charter so I want it to look nice and upscale
Most of the other colors on the boat are tan to beige

Re: Hull Topside Paint Color / Not White

I painted my sailboat with Awlgrip Claret topsides, Cream deck with moondust non skid. Looks awesome and the claret red is very deep, so stains dont stick out on the topsides. Take a look on the awlgrip chart. It is also available in Awlcraft 2000. Both can be matched well, but you have to buy the awlgrip blending agent if you really want to blend it well if you have a damage repair. I also put on 3 coats of clear after the claret.

Re: Hull Topside Paint Color / Not White

Before I was married, when I had questions about colors, i’d take a walk in boatyards to see what I liked.
Now that there are two of us involved in questions of color (21 years now), it is more difficult. Thankfully, we tend to agree but it is still more difficult.
With beige and tan, I’d personally go with a creamy white...I think...
Blue would obviously work with those colors but that is out as stated.
I think of Island Packet when you say beige or tan. Not my personal favorite color combination.
Good luck! Post a picture of the boat when you are done painting?
Curious,
Bruce

I know that you don't want white, but white still is the most maintenance low color. Take care not to create a maintenance drama.

Re: Hull Topside Paint Color / Not White

One final thought. I have seen boats in a pale yellow that I have liked.
I’ll probably be thrown out of the club for suggesting that but...

Zaya is white with pale yellow nonskid
it works despite her topsides being blue like many Pearson's
maybe because the yellow is barely detectable off the dock

well I think it works anyways
white on its own is kinda glarey

Just don't say honey what ever you want. I did with the majority of our house interior. Light whore house pink above the chair rail and a darker whore house pink below it. But that is 51 years.

Thinking of changing the color of our MORC class Jensen 24. It is currently awlgrip gray that never really glossed up. Thinking of Seattle Gray or the very pale yellow that was mentioned above. All of the colors mentioned and including mine are going to show soot and rust stains. I think you have to go dark green, blue or black.

Black works good in your neck of the woods. I grew up on two there with black hulls. The OP is however in the USVI.

With a hull that large the cost of absorbed heat might not be and issue $ wise?
