NEW ORLEANS -- A boater who went missing after his boat began to sink in Lake Pontchartrain near the South Shore Harbor Marina has died Thursday night.
The U.S. Coast Guard began searching for Clyde Naquim Thursday night. The Coast Guard received a call that Naquim's 30-foot white cabin cruiser was taking on water.
Officials say Naquim over the radar said he was putting on his lifejacket. He never returned to the radio.
The Coast Guard says a Good Samaritan was able to rescue Naquim and bring him to the hospital, where he later died."

My thoughts go out to his family...

More information: Man confirmed dead in Lake Ponchartrain boating accident | NOLA.com

"Coast Guard officials confirmed the death of a man whose boat sank Thursday (June 26) in Lake Ponchartrain.

Clyde Naquim, who owned KODY Marine Inc. in Harvey, was on the lake Thursday afternoon near the South Shore Harbor Marina, according to Coast Guard officials.

The Coast Guard reported receiving a mayday call from Naquim at around 3:30 p.m. saying that his 30-foot cabin cruiser was taking on water. Naquim told the Coast Guard that he was putting on his lifejacket, before communication was lost.

The Coast Guard dispatched two response boats along with a MH-65 Dolphin helicopter to begin searching the area for Naquim's boat. KODY Marine sent out boats as well in the search.

A diver with KODY Marine found Naquim in his sunken boat, according to the Coast Guard. Naquim was unresponsive, and was transferred to West Jefferson Medical Center, where he eventually died.

Though there was strong weather on the lake for much of the afternoon, the Coast Guard could not confirm the cause of the accident."

Per the comments in the second link, in 2005 Mr. Naquin responsed and rescued a boater and his crew in the same boat that sunk and in the same area.

How deep is this lake. I heard it was very very shallow. Shallow lakes can get rough in a hurry.

Any more news on this sad story? What happened that the boat was taking on water?

I haven't heard any more about the story.

Yes, Lake Pontchartrain has depths around 14 feet in most places, with some spots 35 feet in depth. He was likely in the 14-18 foot depth range.

It shows how a boater can drown in shallow water just as easily as in deep water. Sad story.
