Morse Control Lever Issue

Hi,

Have recently bought a Tamar 2000 Enterprise which has a Morse single control lever.

I find that when I put the lever ahead or astern, I have to pull the lever so far forward or so far in reverse to get the biting point for the boat to react. And when I do, the engine sounds like it’s at full throttle.

I was expecting a slight movement of the lever would engage when in forward or reverse.

Hope I’ve explained myself!

Thanks.
Shaun

Re: Morse Control Lever Issue

Greetings and welcome aboard the CF, Shaun.

Hope one of these Manuals is useful. In particular, see the “Shift Stroke Adjustment”.

Re: Morse Control Lever Issue

First check the full length of the cable for kinks or extremely sharp turns. Second, take off the cover at the cockpit end and check to make sure there is adequate grease, no corrosion, insect nests. Observe whether handle binding or cable

Thanks very much!

Appreciate the manual - not sure if my expectations when I go from neutral to forward and reverse is correct - thinking that there’s the “in gear” stage and then it accelerates/decelerates....

Thanks again!

Thanks for the reply - will lift the boards and check the cables. Appreciate the email.

Re: Morse Control Lever Issue

usually you do have to "throw" the lever pretty far to get in and out of gear.... if that's what you mean. Can't remember for sure, but maybe 30-40 degrees of rotation?

Re: Morse Control Lever Issue

Thanks very much and yes, that’s what I mean. I think the 30/40 degrees sounds about right.

Re: Morse Control Lever Issue

There may be options on the lever at the control or at the engine that allow you to move the cable closer or further from the center of rotation/shaft. Closer will be quicker action but less leverage.
