NEED weight since I pulled generator ,

Pulled a non working Kohler 5 E gas generator ( 2002 )
Upon inspection crank seized , starter ng, windings grounding
TOTAL rebuild , COSLTY
I need weight were gen set sat ,
Prior lean starboard 150 lbs add in 250 lbs weight of generator
NEED 400 lbs too port ,
Installed pavers were gen sat , looks like crap but were level

Heard 8 D batteries weight 130 lbs each
Install were generator sat
If I want too have everything working as it should , MEANING
A/C while on hook or under way
A 4000 Watt inverter will do the job

IS THIS SOUND ADVICE ?
I was in West Marine , they had huge batteries , very costly
Options for re conditioned batteries ??
ADVICE -THOUGHTS
Time I am done with this brain storm I can have generator rebuild
hard wired and were done .

THANKS

Re: NEED weight since I pulled generator ,

Give some thought to smaller batteries; 130# will be a bear to move around and smaller will fit in smaller places and allow shifting for trim.

I suppose AC can be run off an inverter/battery combination, but not for very long. Most rigs I've heard of, including mine, assume the genset or the engine is running, supplying enough power to not be a drain on the batteries.

How can anyone give advice without knowing what kind of boat and how you use it?

Re: NEED weight since I pulled generator ,

If I were looking for weight I’d go with something useful like new batteries maybe

Re: NEED weight since I pulled generator ,

Chain tends to be heavy and might come in handy someday. Heavier than concrete but a lot more expensive. A tank of water could add weight- over 60 pounds per cubic foot, 8.34 pounds per gallon. 50 gallons = 417 pounds.

Re: NEED weight since I pulled generator ,

Good 6volts weigh about 65lbs each. So from two you get the same weight as from each of 8Ds but at half the effort to move around.

Re: NEED weight since I pulled generator ,

I would suggest 3 Firefly Oasis L15+ 4 volt batteries wired in series for 12 volts. 450ah but 80 percent useable and quick to recharge. Around $750 each though. Weigh about 100lbs each.

First of all 8DGel batteries weigh 160 lbs. each...I replaced both of mine last year. They are located immediately port of the main diesel and the prior owner added three solid lead bars on the starboard outboard side amidships under the settee, it works.

I pulled the Onan 8.0MDKD genset from the boat within a year of purchase. That was 500 ugly lbs. but it was properly located on the centerline behind the main diesel...never been sorry for it. Finally installed a stainless steel arch on the stern with 4x140W (560W) of solar panels split between it and the dodger...never been sorry for that either.

I have not read any articles that recommend running air conditioners underway...only in port on AC power. Genset powered air conditioners in anchorages will just piss everybody else there off. Air conditioner run off batteries not a good idea due to high power draw.

Re: NEED weight since I pulled generator ,

Wouldn't it make more sense to relocate some items from the other side and reduce overall weight instead of adding more useless weight?

Re: NEED weight since I pulled generator ,

Brand new 8D AGM are in the range of $300 each. Does the company that sells reconditioned 8Ds for $439 provide some sort of magic spell?

This. But wait, how will you charge your existing batteries w/o your generator, assuming you anchor out more than overnight? And if you add more batteries, won't you have even more need for a working generator?

If you were using your generator before, when it was working, and you don't replace/fix it, how do you plan to make up the deficit in charging? Depends on your power budget and existing battery bank, which you don't specify, but you need to know all that and do the math.

If you do add more batteries and don't want lithium, the 4D size is more efficient in size and capacity than 8D (use 2x4D), and can be moved by one person.

I would just replace the generator with a diesel unit, unless your engine is also gasoline.

Re: NEED weight since I pulled generator ,

Reconditioned batteries are a song and dance. Someone turned them in when they changed out their batteries and the battery seller just cleaned them up and verified they would still take a charge. The 1 year warranty tells the story.

A new Dyno 8d battery (top West Coast brand) sells for about $400.

Have your mother-in-law sit on the high side of the boat.

How about a refrigerated keg of beer with a CO2 dispenser?

Re: NEED weight since I pulled generator ,

I like what one of the responders indicated USELESS WEIGHT
Never considered reconditioned batteries , was a thought
Regal installed generator , then engines , Checking oil is a knuckle
bleeder . Access too rear of generator , ZERO - must come out
Non working generator was hundreds of lbs of dead weight .
Moving items from starboard too port , ? only have 2 batteries
& 6 gallon hot water tank , that I have access , Waste tank is on
starboard but buried and when full ( always empty ) is 20 gallons
Fuel & fresh water is centered .

Anything I install in that area has too be something I can slide along
side engine , Were gen sat I can install a number of batteries but 130 lbs are
over kill for my needs , Just wanted too explore options
CRAZY - Wanted less weight ,
need all this useless weight too balance boat ,
